i prefere lord of the rings, and the new LOTR is out in 3 years and is this the last? harry potter? which was the best over the time, i loved LOTR and hated harry potter, but a lot of people i know are the other way around, i know harry potter was stolen from an old film called Troll,
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092115/

but not a lot of people know that

so im a LOTR fan

lol believe it or not therre are lots of adult fans

There isn't a new LOTR...

There is The Hobbit instead, but its a different story entirely, set before the LOTR quest. A few of the same characters though - Bilbo, Gandalf, Thorin and Gollum.

Tolkien produced other books - The Simarillian and a posthumous book based on non-finished work, finished by his some Christopher.

I don't really like either of them. Just not my sort of thing.

I really don't think it is fair to compare them. LOTR is a thoroughly researched peice of fiction, which was written over a number of years, has a comprehensive backstory, languages that you can actually use and was a groundbreaking peice of work.

Harry Potter is an entertaining story that (from what I can tell, and I will wait until my kids are old enough to be interested in them and read the books with them, cos they are kids books) has stolen lots of different ideas from previous works or fiction and mixed them all up into a very enjoyable read. However, it's popularity and commercialisation has kinda taken the edge of it for me. HEnce why I will wait and read them with my kids.

LOTR I can read again and again.

And with the films, the extended versions are the best. And I also don't think you can compare Return of the King, which won the most Oscars ever (ok along with a couple of others- Ben Hur and Titanic) with the Harry Potters, however popular they are.

Now Terry Pratchett, that is a whole other fantasy world, and he even wrote books with Cameras in them.....................

Amen to that - I totally agree :)

LOTR is an unbeatable piece of fiction imho!

tbh i dont think i have seen either so i just cant comment :D

Really? Wow, congrats. LotR isn't a kiddy film in the way Harry Potter is but liked by adults.

Thanks for that

Btw, do you get charged for each comma you use? If so,pay a bit extra, it'll help your "witty" put-downs make grammatical sense ;)

Bit of a shame that you choose to miss my reply then ...

Both of your replies in this thread only back up my observation

Perhaps the fact that I chose to ignore your comment should be a fairly good indication of how much I'm interested in what you have to say ;)

I do. Got me a capital letter at the start and one of those there full stops at the end,

Now all you need to do is fit the comma in the correct place. Why not use the one you incorrectly ended the statement above with?

LOTR all the way

If I am to be brutally honest LOTR was the biggest bit of crap I ever saw. I thought it was just absolute rubbish.

Harry Potter is quite good , can't wait till the last one now Emma Watson is 18

FAir enough, each to their own. However, I may suggest that you read the books, and then go back to the films. Start at the Hobbit, then through the 3 volumes of LOTR. It will be worth it, as they are better than the films, and actually have a better ending.

As for Emma Watson, just cos she is 18 now, doesn't mean she was then........

It also means you're not likely to see any scenes with her finding new uses for her wand. "Wandus vibratus!"

I did read the Hobbit at school many many moons age, a very good book.

As an older person, I'm only now allowed to say Emma is quite cute as she turned 18 this year ;)

What and LOTR didn't steel lots from other works of fictions? Almost all of it is just old english mythology.

wow how can people be nasty over this Q lol ... everything i say people turn on themselves with.. and its ok to like emma watson from 16... as long as u dont produce any porn with her... then it would be illegal

lol belive it or not im feeling a lot more sane now than i have for many months, and im finding these arguments just daft...

Your right they did. I suppose because Tolkein kinda created (and I am too young to know what other fantasy writers were around before him) the genre, or at least opened it up to the masses it's different to Rowling. As I have said though, I haven't read HP, so can't comment, I am just recycling other peoples comments. May be I should shut up then.......:p

I thought the first LOTR was superb, very well done.

The others seemed to drag (in part down the the books).

Never seen any of the Harry Potter films, but as far as I know they are children's books. Nothing wrong with that, but I wouldn't want to see the films, in the same way I wouldn't go a see "Play School" or "Peter and Jane" if they were made into a films either.

"The Hobbit" is a really good book, and much more child friendly the the LOTR trilogy. The HP and Hobbit are probably aimed at under 12 mainly I guess. We did "The Hobbit" in school in English Lit (which surprised me)
