I was in the photography section at harrods today and their prices seemed rather high?

£179 Nikon 50mm 1.8G
£1650 Nikon 24-70mm f2.8

...and it went on.

They offered 10% off but even then it was a lot more than I've seen at John Lewis etc.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised but can only assume it's some kind of concession rather than Harrods themselves.

are you surprised that the most overpriced place in the world is actually overpriced?

I was actually, at the fact they seemed to be higher than the manufacturer's RRP?

Harrods? Expensive? whatever next!

Of course some sarcasm was to be expected but it was their prices vs. the RRP I wasn't expecting.

Thanks for your replies anyway.

You obviously have no idea what those green bags cost ?

Certainly do... I've bought watches and many items in the past (at RRP or less). I'm referring to the difference with RRP but thanks for another constructive reply.

Maybe its a class thing , I've had people refuse to by things from me as they're too cheap . Yep nuts I know, but they'd happily buy the product elsewhere for more money .

That could definitely be a possible reason, you're right. Harrods has amazing customer service which could be another reason why people are happy to pay over the odds I guess.

More likely is that the people who shop there have more money than sense.

My company sold and installed a Bang & Olufsen TV and speaker package which cost about £18000 to someone moving in to an apartment overlooking Hyde Park. Nothing too unusual about that, only whilst we were there, we heard they went shopping to Harrods and spent a grand on a toilet roll holder. A few hundred quid over RRP doesn't mean much to your typical Harrods shopper.

Harrods seem to have two types of customers. Those who actually shop there, and a lot of people - including tourists - who just want to see what it's really like. I doubt if the first category are very price sensitive.

More money than sense? Maybe, but these prices are probably inconsequential if you're wealthy.

The name does have some cachet. I used to know someone who saved the Harrods bag, from her one and only purchase, to impress other people. Bit pathetic, but I suppose this sort of thing isn't that unusual.
