I've had a quick Forum Search but cant readily find what I'm looking for. I am considering getting a shoulder harness for the 1D MK IV with the 500mm f/4L attached. A fairly heavy combo. Any suggestions for a suitably robust setup??

Cheers in advance
Brash!!!!

Scaffolding!

A Black rapid strap would do the job nicely. I've carried a heavy combo for miles on one.

You could also get Ade to lug your stuff round

Nah, he's a Nikon man, I wouldn't trust him with decent gear, come to think of it, I wouldn't trust him anyhow.

I made my own from an old tripod strap,(wide neoprene), with a brass clip from an old dog lead and an old compact wrist lanyard as secondary security.
I'm assuming 'black rapid' style here and not the convoluted bra style configurations.

As Gary said, it's a clone of eBay and I brought the extra clips to balance the weight on both camera and lens,

Dunno. I quite fancied the double shoulder type, maybe even for two cameras on some occasions. 7dayshop.com do a cheap one.

K Strap, Q Strap, its one of several chinese Black Rapid clones and cost about £15 off Ebay

They're amazing value, but not exactly Black Rapid clones - BR is in a different league quality-wise. But for the money, usually around a tenner on Amazon, they're worth a punt. However, the straps are not securely sewn at the back - basically just attached to the thin top layer. I hand-reinforced mine, with treble stitching right through all the layers - it's secure now :)

With really heavy lenses, I attach the lens foot to one clip and the camera to the other, so it hangs across your tummy. Very comfortable and easy to use.

Yeh, that sounds like a good idea. Think I'll take a punt to the 7dayshop one. they're stuff is usually sound for the price. I've plenty older standard straps I can use to make it a bit more secure if needs be.

Yep, using my setup for about 4-5 months now, without any problems

I'm gonna go for that.

Thanks everybody for the help. Appreciated.;)

I did stand 5ft 8" now I'm 5ft 7" carrying all that weight though :-)

I'll put on my high heels.

Now ordered off 7day's ebay seller.

Ta!!

Stick to the black rapid especially with that value of gear Brash I'm pretty sure BR still cover damage caused by failure of their straps and fixings if that ever happened

Ha. Too late I've ordered. I'll see how it is when I get it. My house insurance covers my stuff which I've specified if the worst happens

I know people are recommending Black Rapid and it could well be up to the job, but when I was looking into
a strap to carry my Nikon 500 F4 lens plus camera I contacted Black Rapid, explained what I wanted and the gear I had, their
response at the time was that The Black Rapid strap would not be suitable due to the weight of the kit.

I ended up making an over the shoulder strap with some heavy webbing onto which I machine stitched two ends from a normal
strap to fit through the lugs on the lens, its being on the lens for a couple of years now with no problems at all.comfy to carry as well.

I'd've assumed that harnesses had been fully explored already in the 'Nude & Glamour' section of these forums ...

It doesn't need extra straps, the stitching needs reinforcing at the back. You can see in one of those 7Day shop pics, one of them shows the back (middle, left pic). It's not very clear but at the top of the photo you can just make out darker lines that are the stitching going all the way through - as it should. That's the front, but on the back - bottom of photo, the stitching doesn't go all the way through - it's only sewn to the thin outer material. You'll see when you get it, easy to fix, but without reinforcement I wouldn't trust it with a 500/4 for long.

Another advantage of carrying the way I suggested, using both clips with the lens across your tummy, is double security on everything.

Yeah I know late as ever :D

I bought a sunsniper double harness a couple of years ago and love it, I use the straps designed for the P&S
as extra security attacthing them direct to the bodies, not ever had the main ones fail yet...........................

I can't see why anyone would buy cheap and attach expensive gear but that's their choice.

Sadly due to an injury last year I now find it hard to use and carry two long lenses and bodies,
have tried one body and two lenses, that worked fine just not at the moment, my problem not the harnes

Don`t think I would like to carry a 500 with that harness pal. I had a BR one and found it a pain to be honest.

I have an optech tripod strap that I have altered to loop around the carrying rings on the lens, dunno if Canon 500 have those. To be honest I end up carrying it by the foot most of the time.

Im the same Ade even with my heavy duty strap I always keep hold of the lens foot, its just to much weight and money
to have swinging around, plus your hand is in the right position to start lifting the lens if a bird suddenly pops up.

Well, at the moment I've got it on a bog standard Canon strap attached to the carrying rings and its usually slung over my shoulder and I then carry it by the foot. The harness looks to be at least as robust and a tad more comfortable. I'll strengthen is as needs be. Sure it'll be fine.

the nice thing about nearly all optech straps is they stretch, so you get less jaring as you walk

Where did you get the extra clips from if you don't mind me asking? I can only find official br ones which cost as much as the cheaper straps themselves.

Took them of two cheap single ones IHad :-)

General consensus was anything other than optech or black rapid not to be trusted. I've still not bought one yet though so i'll be interested to see what you think to the 7Day shop one..

Best chuck my sunsniper one in the bin then :(

I moved from a cheap sling strap to Optech strap a couple of years ago. I have found it very comfortable and secure.

Did you order the 7day one brash? What are your thoughts on it?

Yeh I did. Seems fine but due to the weight of the 500 it doesn't sit right on the shoulders. Fine for a couple of lighter set ups tho.

That's good to hear. You're happy with the quality of it too?
