Welcome to Kent.
Hard water, or a fortune to prevent, is a fact of life. :(

We had it also in Berkshire but I have been using a standard water filter which has helped a bit......

Tell me about it, the water around here is that hard, I get threatened with menaces every time I turn a tap on.

Welcome to the world of furred up appliances and heating systems, Archangel.

I live in North Kent, and hard water is a problem only if you drink it (gallstones/kidney stones), so we buy bottled water, and the kettle is fur free. I have also noticed along with the hard water, that we have noticeably high chlorine levels, and before we used bottled water, tea used to taste like swimming pool water.
We have had an iron pack up, but we treat the other appliances so have not had too many problems.

Move to Scotland:p

Get a water softener :)

Hydroflow hs38.... I have no connection with them but had one fitted many years ago and made a great difference... I know other people who have used them successfully a well .

We've had a kinetico for over 10 years. Expensive up front but no maintenance, no moving parts and it really does work. Just add salt now and again (about £40 a year- more if your water is harder).

I don't own one and have no connection with this company but how about one of these - http://www.eddy.uk.com/

It does sound a bit like those "magnetic" water softeners but they do offer -

"We want you to be completely happy with the performance of your Eddy Electronic Descaler. In the unlikely event that you are unhappy IN ANY WAY with the performance of your Eddy, you can return it at any time within 12 months after purchase for a no-quibble full refund of your purchase cost."

When you boil water you drive all the chlorine out of the water. There is no chlorine in boiled water. But it is possible to get a TCP like taste if you have your water in contact with some rubber/plastic and then boiled it. The amount of trouble that plastic kettles gave when they first came out was incredible, not having check valves between plumbed in washing machines and dishwashers can allow water that has been sitting in the rubber pipe to be drawn back when you turn on the kitchen tap and I have actually come across a sub-standard tap washer that gave the same effect.

Gallstones and kidney stones are not caused by hard water they are due to a body malfunction.

Interestingly a study done in the 1980's in two areas one fed by soft water and one by hard water but both socially and economically similar showed that the people in the hard water area were less likely to have cardiovascular disease.

But hard water definitely furs up kettles, washing machines etc.

You're spending an awful lot of money to avoid conditions which aren't caused by drinking tap water - hard or soft.

When my mate comes up from London to Liverpool, he says the water is lovely to drink. He says it knackers his kettle, and it does not do much for his complexion
