i was having such a nice day, finally after a long time got my film camera loaded with film ready to go out for some street photos. As i was getting ready dropped my camera on the carpet, didn’t really look like it was that bad. Went out to take pictures, tried to turn the focus ring and it wouldn’t turn.

The bloody Lens is broken…
I only bought it last week..
I’m gutted…

It’s a prime lens, voightlander ultron 40mm f2 forn nikon.

What’s my options? The focus ring is ruined, no visible damage but i can’t turn it. It’s so stiff it makes focusing impossible

Many lenses are not difficult to strip and re-assemble, and there are often detailed guides online.

It is possible something has simply been forced out of position and binding, it is not likely the focus thread is damaged, it is quite robust.

If the lens is valuable, it might be worth sending it for repair, but balance that against the price of a replacement,

Dunno if its worth fixing, i paid 350 for the lens. I’m surprised it’s not working. It literally fell from half a meter high on the carpet…tried to turn the focus both directions to get it unstuck but still too stiff.

A bit of WD40 aught to fix that :exit:
i can’t even take a joke today…
awww I’m cursed this is the second Lens I’ve ruined…

I've had a few lenses serviced or repaired and prices seem reasonable when you consider that you could end up with a good know condition lens working again rather than starting the hunt again and buying what could turn out to be a dog off ebey.

So, in your place I'd get a quote for a repair. If you're lucky it may just need to be stripped and reassembled at £50-£70 or so.

Good luck with it.

@woof woof where did you sent your lens to be repaired? Thx

That would be a very good price.

Still, £100-£140 plus postage for the same reasons you gave would still be worth it for a £350 lens

Unfortunately the guy I use is now semi retired and isn't taking on any new customers but thankfully he's still accepting lenses from me as an existing customer and I'll be sending him one next week :D

But yes, I've found him excellent and reasonable price wise.

Maybe someone else can suggest a repairer?

Yes, i would really appreciate if someone recommended where to sent the lens.

Have a look if the lens is "square" it's possible its landed on a corner and twisted it (cross threaded) a bit, can you pull or push it level if it is.

I took my last [not a film camera] lens that was damaged and out of warranty to Don Clark in Wotton under Edge. Might worth giving him a ring. When I was a Canon CPS platinum, I took my cameras to the people in Stoke - Lehmans.

Just a round lens, thx for the suggestion anyway

I’ve emailed him, thx!

Great stuff.

I hope you can get it economically repaired Marino. Don't forget to post about how it all goes :D

Sorry I didnt make myselef clear, I meant square to the camera body, not bent in, maybe warped out of line a bit?

Thx! I will update, I’m going off the voightlander lens now. Still can’t understand how the lens got damaged from that height when falling on carpet… anyway just have to suck it up..

yeah it looks ok. Btw lens focus is just as stiff on and off the camera

I use Alan Marlow in Sheperton. He's got a couple of my lenses at the moment. Does good work.

Just sticking my nose in for suggestions - the 85mm lens I picked up rom Japan is a little tight. The aperture blades don't retract fully so could use a CLA no doubt. Seller is paying.

I used Thomas Camera Services in the past for my Canon F1n but havent sent a lens to them yet. Just waiting for their say so and I will be shipping them off the lens.

@Plain Nev thx for the suggestion, unfortunately he doesn’t repair voightlander lens

Update,

No luck with the lens, tried to call a few people from UK but all said most likely will need a part ordered, which is not something they’ll do. So basically i have to send it in Germany, and since i don’t have the patience for that I’ll sell it for parts on eBay.

So yeah, stay away from voightlander lens next time…

Pity, but there is a good possibility that sending it to Germany for repairs would not be good value for money

And the money i have to pay for postage, just not worth it. It’s good knowledge for the future thought. Parts for well known brands are easier to find. No more fancy lens brands in the future

You're probably right. It wouldn't be economically practical. Shame.
