Well, its been a great day for me.......NOT.

My lovely dog ralph has a nose for chocolate (I know its bad for him) and escaped and found my sons stash of Easter eggs! cut a long story short he knocked my camera off the ironing board (not an obvious place to have it) with my 580ex and 24-105 attached. Now clearly the lens took most of the damage and the front element became dislodged. I have since repaired this but have made a schoolboy error when 'fixing' the red-ring which flew off. I kinda super glued the ring back on only to realize the manual focus ring turns this area too. So now I have no manual focus as I've super-glued the bloody thing together. Hoping tomorrow to get some remover and sort the problem out. Not after any advice though it is more than welcome, just thought I'd have a little rant about my great hangover bank holiday! Anyone wanna buy a mint 24-105....

 :bonk:  :thankyou:
Now that did make me laugh, sorry Pete hope you get it sorted

Sorry to hear that, although it did make me laugh as well...

...suppose it could be worse if you had glued your fingers to the focus ring and you couldn't focus it...:bonk:

Seriously though, I hope you get it sorted.

Somehow, your sig seems quite apt:exit:
Hope you get it sorted.

Drop an Nikon F5,with lens on it years ago,on my windowsill to remind to be more carful :D

Sorry Peter but it made me laugh too! And it really shouldn't as last night I knocked my laptop off the arm of the sofa and onto a tiled floor. Smashed screen!
Hope you get it sorted.

Phil.

Oh dear... I kinda feel guilty for giggling at this now! :)

I hope the damage isn't too serious! Look on the bright side... Things can only get better! ;)

I read this and thought "that was stupid" followed rapidly (once I had inspected my 24-105) by "I'd have done exactly the same thing...."

Good luck fixing it buddy

Here are some pictures of insides of cameras and lenses. Have a look through and you might be able to spot the brand of superglue this guy uses...

Good luck with the super glue remover, not funny when it happens to you but your post did make me laugh...Sorry.

In hindsight, it has made me realise one of the many benefits of owning a pro body. Not only did the camera come out unscathed but it doubled up as a great beating weapon for my dog! I am joking of course, he just got a finger wagged at him. I am surprised at the extent of damage the lens took being an l-series. oh and as for the strap dangling down.....well naturally this was adjusted to the correct hight for dog head to enter safely!

The combined weight of a 1DIII, 24-105L, and 580EX...
Your doggie's lucky you're not having to superglue him back together. :(

Not so much of a 'hangover' disaster but a slight bit of cosmetic damage through my my sheer stupidity - coming back to my uni address on the train with some of my cameras and lenses secured nice and tightly in a strong cardboard box in my pull along case.

Go to get some of it out later and discover that my pristine Minolta 70 - 210mm f4 'Beercan' now has a long deep scratch (right down to the bright steel) on the barrels enamel finish :bang::bang: and I'm trying to work out how the hell it got it, everything in the box was smooth plastic or card (film box) with no sharp edges including the other lens and the camera (Dynax 505si Super). Finally I discover the (probable) cause, the only slightly sharp object in the box, a case for a screw in filter with a couple of edges which have become worn over time. All I can think is that with the slight movement during transport it must have leant against it and started rubbing :( Why didn't I remember to put the bubble wrap around it?

Oh well at least the lens still works fine and its only cosmetic - Minolta built them like tanks (steel and glass only except for a bit of rubber on the zoom ring), I suppose it could be a battle scar.

Well if anyone is following this thread, I have succeeded in freeing my manual focus ring! I have a lens which was once immaculate now looking a bit war wounded in places (hardly bad though) thanks to my trusty leatherman knife! Had to score around the edge of the red ring to release it from the manual ring! Will go out and test camera and lens just to make sure all is ok! Just a note, I was very close to sending lens away which would have cost quite a large sum of money. For a little time and effort and research I have completely buggered a cracking lens! (only joking) all appears good! Moral of the story.....never leave your camera on an ironing board near chocolate, if you have an English bull terrier!

I think that is why god invented free advertising papers...

Crickey, it's more than just bad, check out Theobromine!

Could some delicate care with an open razor remove the superglue?

I freed it up with a leatherman which is better than any razor :D
Believe me I certainly didn't want Ralph eating my sons Easter egg but he's a terrible thief and a quick one at that. English bull terriers are certainly no 'ordinary' dog :cuckoo: I remember when he was about 3 he broke into the kitchen and ripped open a closed rucksack from the worktop, which had the contents of a supermarket shop in. Items missing (including containers and wrappers) Terry's chocolate orange, French stick, whole tub of flora, and a packet of sleeping pills.
That was 4 years ago......my vet told me off at the time, like I meant him to do it! Seriously, short of keeping a bully in a cage and being extremely vigilant, accidents happen!

Sounds like you have a handful! Our Beagle takes a stealth approach to sourcing extra food these days and silently crawls under the dining room table like a ninja and literally sits with his mouth open at the base of the high chair. He knows it's only a matter of minutes before the food starts dropping down lol
