Does anyone use a hand strap instead of, or along with a neck strap for their camera? I quite often walk with my camera at my side held in one hand, particularly when I have a bigger lens on. Just a matter of time before I drop it I suppose. Just wondered if hand straps are of benefit. They start about £12 for a half decent one.

I have hand straps on both my cameras, worth their weight in gold and much more comfortable than neck straps.

Cheers, any one you'd recommend? Been looking on Ebay, they all look pretty much the same. Was considering a UK seller about £12. Some HK ones are cheaper but I'd prefer to stay UK. Ta!

Well actually I made both of mine myself (out of broad strong elastic) so I can't speak for any of the commercial ones.

I have one for the 1D - the pucka Canon E1 version, which I got very reasonably via the Hong Kong route. It's a great bit of kit - I keep meaning to get another for the other body.

If you use it with an Optech strap you can combine it with the neck strap and just unclip the neck strap when you want to be less fettered.

Cheers Steep and CT. Just ordered one of ebay. Thanks for the advice.:thumbs:

Absolutely!
It enables me to let the cam 'dangle' on my hand without having to tense any hand muscles. And no fear of it falling. Very comfortable for longer shoots. And instantly ready to shoot.

Once you've used a handstrap you will never ever want to do without one again.

BTW, I have both a handstrap and the neckstrap on my main camera. The neckstrap is never used around my neck* – least of all when shooting – but is used as a shoulderstrap, for transport of the cam when not in he bag.

*except when climbing a tree or a roof with the cam...

Have fun!
