Hello all,

I have a basic understanding of how to get my way around a camera and I'm slowly improving by sticking the camera in manual and seeing how an image can change using different settings.

However I do struggle with lighting and making my images pop straight out of the camera.

I've recently been given a collection of toy cars that are boxed from the 1970's that I'd like to get some great pictures of.

I've already got a Hama XL photo studio, a Canon 580EXII and 2 other cheap Yunguo flashes with cheap wireless triggers to go with my Canon 30D. I've got a Canon 70-200mm f4 L and Canon 50mm f1.8 lenses and also a cheap Hama tripod at my disposal and I'd like to understand how and why I should set up my shot in order to get some great sharp pictures.

Any help appreciated as I struggle with lighting and as I mentioned above.

Many thanks,

I would start by setting up the mini studio, and putting in one of the cars. Make sure the background and car are both spotless. You may want to put a peice of reflective materil under the car if you want a nice reflection.

I would then put a Yungnuo flash on either side of the studio, and set them on half power and see what you get. Half the fun is jsut setting up, shooting and seeing what happens!

You may need to use something to stop too much light flooding forwards from the flashes, use a shutter speed of 250th and play with both shutter and aperture to see what effects you get.

I've got diffusers for all the flashes so I can put them on.

Would you put the flashes at 45 degrees to the subject or directly at the side? What about lighting from above?

Try it!! I would try with and without diffusers and with a third light at the top.

Stick ot on the tripod and then lean the tripod over the studio? Put the studio on a table, then put something above it, maybe a chari and have it on there. Loads of ways.
