Hi all,

I'm in the process of setting up a support website for the recent tragedy that has struck Haiti. I thought the forum may know where I could use some photographs of recent events that have happened there. The website is purely non-profit and my only aim is to help the awareness of what has happened and how people can help.

Why should the UK donate anything?

Not at all, We've been pumping money into Africa for decades and the problem still exists. We have ex-service men sleeping rough cos they get NO help after serving their country, Haiti has been ran by incompetents for years, yet we have to jump in.

jeez, come on guys, its a ****ing catastrophe, not an excuse to get on soap boxes, if you want to give, give. If you dont, then dont - but have some compassion.

Not much difference is there? Here's me thinking we all lived on the same planet. Some people still think 50 years behind. The planet is a smaller place these days.

No soap box here Matty,Brown has donated money,again, whilst incapable of sorting the problems at home out first.

Maybe not, but if we didn't throw so much away, we might have sorted ourselves out.

I do believe it's tragic what has happened, will i donate, probably, but I'm more likely to buy a tramp a meal first.

You know what puts it into perspective other than the thousands of people that died? The fact that people like you and I have got up and flown out there to help while we sit on a web forum debating tired old arguments.

I worked enough years in Africa mate,not spouting on forums, I ain`t wasting anymore time on it, my life is too short. Selfish? yep.
 
Hey lets not worry, we've got loads of money.

As we pay benefits anything between £25-40,000 a year in benefits that i'm aware of.

No you don't have to jump in, but try to imagine living in **** on a couple of quid a day. Yes their government maybe *****, hell ours isn't great, but to blame the population is a plain sad.

It did make me a bit bitter and twisted about all the charity stuff in fairness.Which obviously shows at times,usually unintentionally.If the money/goods actually got through then that would be a huge bonus,from experience,it does not. A lot of people get rich from Western donations, not the people that need it,in my experience.

You ve already declared selfishness , u dont need any more excuses ... Children in Haiti do not know u Exist anyway ...

Exactly why I only ever donate to causes in this country.

I seriously feel for these people and would if I could! But if the western governments can't really be arsed in doing anything other than getting us to commit money via 'so called charities' that will just soak up the money in expenses etc then the idea of giving money is a waste of time! What Haiti needs is people, engineers, food and water and they need it now, They don't need pathetic charities that actually do next to nothing other than keep themselves in jobs.

Money is not the issue .... saving people who are trapped and being buried alive is ..... Money comes later!

I for one can sacrifice the £10 that would buy me a couple of BK meals .... it will go a lot further out there and it may even save a life....

Taxes are being abused by this government in nonsense expenses. You gonna stop paying them as well?? :thinking:

I see this is turning into another political debate with the usual lines.

Carl I think this is a great and selfless idea and its a shame it has been spoiled on this thread. I cant really advise on where to get photos if you want to take into account copywright, etc but good luck and please post the link when it is up, there are people here that do care (my 20 quid is in) :)

I think this thread ought to find itself better at peace than war any time soon. There is a time and place for discussing the politics of corruption but here and now probably isn't it. if you want to donate, go ahead, if not, no need to bleat, just say nothing and go read something else please chaps. :nono:

Are you actually living on the same planet as decent people? ... so someone is dying and you talk about the cost of drinking water and donating money ....... The point is it's people and equipment they need to help and dig them out of collapsed buildings etc ....

Please go ahead and contribute your £10 and sleep peacefully knowing you have done your bit :thumbsdown:
 
I have donated to the tradgedy only £3.00 via a collection at work but in all honesty I cant see that it is going to make any difference and it probably will end up in the equivilent of an Icelandic bank or just swelling the coffers of a designated charity.

After the Tsunami a few years ago alot of charities were critiscised for not spending thier donations...it just makes me wonder if it is another chance for charities to boost thier finances whilst appearing to be a knight in shining armour...roll on the fact finding holidays..sorry to sound sceptical and I DO care but when charities plead poverty whilst investing Millions upon millions in risky offshore establishments it smarts a bit to find that charity is big business.

I financially support cancer research and a local childrens charity..I care.

The people out there need food, water and shelter.
Those that are NOT trapped by the rubble have nothing to eat or drink.
These items cost, and it is this that I am donating towards.
I did sleep well, and when I see the images of people out there struggling, I know that I have done my little bit to help.

I think that you got it right - you really are on cloud cuckoo land.

Yes there is a time and a place to discuss the corruption and ineptitude of overseas charities Yvonne, this is a photography forum above all else, but we discuss other things as well. So far, it has been reasonably civil,I don`t see the problem in that.......:shrug:
 
I find it curious that Westerners always feel the need to dip into their pockets when things like this happen - could it be because they harbour a secret guilt for being better-off in the first place.
If we were really so altruistic, we'd donate 50% of our earnings to charity all the time, not just when natural disasters like this occur; then when these catastophes happened, those living in the Third World would be better prepared to deal with them - in fact they wouldn't be living in the Third World as global wealth would be more evenly distributed.

I've seen the farcical way that most charities (or NGO's more properly, apart from MSF, for whom I have a great deal of time, even though they're mostly Tree-Hugging Liberals) behave at first hand, like a couple of others here...

So: Sorry Haitians, you live in a Corrupt, Despotic S***-Hole, now you have to deal with it: you had your chances and made your choices.

But no...wait: here comes the despised Free-West to make things right again... keep on slagging us off in public, but when it all turns to s***, who's expected to pick up the pieces?

Personally I couldnt live with myself if I didnt help those so much poorer than myself. I dont have much money but I have so much more than these poor people so I have given a bit to help. Its always the sight of children suffering that upsets me most.

If others dont want to give to charity or prefer to give to UK charities thats fine. There are plenty of worthy charities working in the UK.

Think this sums it up nicely. Its all down to the individual what they do with there money.
 
Give £10 and pray it gets where it is meant to. Im open to helping disasters but not to giving to to country's who have corrupt Governments and don't care about their own people. Africa year after year wasted.... Get rid of their governments and you will get somewhere.

Getting too political this thread........................
