When taking portrait photos with flash and model flicks her hair, sometimes the hair movement is not sharp and the flash speed of 125 is insufficient.

Can someone please explain the answer to me as to how a higher speed is achieved for this. Or even much higher speeds with flash.

Flash speed of 125 ? are you talking shutter speed? if so this has no bearing on teh flash speed.
you can not adjust the speed of the flash which is not going to be this slow its more like 10000 of a second or some way near that. if you have 125 shutter and have a lot of ambient light this will give you your blur set your shutter as fast as your sync will allow you to.

Hi Malcolm,

Are you using Canon flash on your 7D? With the 580EX you can set it to synch at any shutter speed up to 8000sec (not sure about other speedlights).

where are you working relative to the ambient, if its only a stop or two below then there will be some bleed through

what kind of flash are you using as some cheap studio flash has surprisingly long durations

this is high speed sync, better cosidered as a form of continuous light than flash (head **** often ensues when I try to think about it)

thanks for the swift replies. Stew, I was not aware that the shutter speed could go way up if using TTL and triggered with the 7D. I have a Canon 580EXII and 430EXII and the setup is at present in my lounge, 21' x 13' with floor to ceiling gold curtains. I can draw other curtains and restrict the ambient light fairly well if needed. Another location I wish to use is shooting onto a black background but from within a conservatory and all open to natural light.

I have acquired a set of 3 Yongnuo triggers, so I also have the option of operating in Manual mode with the triggers firing both speedlights and I have a light meter which is very useful.

As this lighting is rather new to me, I would have liked to go on the Lencarta training to learn more, or meet up with someone who is more advanced in this area, but Garry is 336 miles away, so I am trying to make do for the time being.

Any help would be appreciated.

I only make it 168 miles between us, that's local:) Some people travel twice that.

Reduce your ambient as much as you can and shoot at 1/250th sec. If that doesn't freeze the hair, reduce the flash power, which will reduce the flash duration.

You're very likely to have problems with the ambient light in your conservatory though, so if you really must shoot in there you'd be better off at night.

my typing is not so hot, it's 136 miles not 336 ( 2hours 21 mins), a long way for me these days, but I will make it sometime.

Appreciate the help and will try what you suggest and appreciate the light in the conservatory will be a problem.
