i know there was a thread on here about it a few weeks ago.....

went to buy a washing machine today. One we wanted was £479 (Best online price - £449) Told the salesman wasn't paying full whack

After some healthy fun friendly and good mannered bartering got it for the entirely random amount of £404.10

Not a bad saving for 20 mins of screwing him down to the ground...

Well done! My kinda man, haggling should be a national sport!
If the salesman wont haggle, I walk away, they usually call you back!

we had to buy a washer last week

sorry but we beat you we didnt even ask for anything off. think we payed just under 300 with some what ever happens cover took it to about 450

the sales woman then turned round and said i will see what i can do about the price called her manager over and we got £40 taken off the price

so we didnt even have to barter lol

i think you mean haggling - bartering would be if you were offering him goods or services in exchange instead of cash.

then again you are norfolk so maybe you do mean battering and you were offering part payment in potatoes

(incidentally i got a 1 year old bosch washer off of ebay for 50 quid (for our volunteers house) - i very rarely buy white good new because there are so many people who change their kitchens every couple of years or less , and replace all the white goods at the same time then sell the old ones for a pittance)

You can almost always get a fair bit off if you're looking at display models / last in stock.

yep, but it wasn't

I always try it, does not always work but it costs nothing to try. got good discounts on my three direct debits, RAC cover, British gas cover and National trust in the last few weeks, but I had problems getting a discount on my 7D though!!!

If you don't ask you don't get - it's always worth asking in my opinion :D

Was it in an independent shop or one of the big chains? Most of the chains are staffed by teenagers without the authority to do anything!

comet

My mate went to Jessops to buy a cheap flash, they offered him insurance for £14 which he refused. The assistant then said "Ok, then how about £4". Bargain and he didnt even haggle :).

I've done it in Jessops, Currys, Moss (suit shop), Three (mobile phone company) and a few different places. I generally get either something thrown in for free or money off.

Sports equipment, just bought a whole new set to replace the old and got almost £1000 off from calling shops etc and beating the prices down. What does my nut is people with no previous experience probably would end up paying full whack :(

Now I'm trying to find backpacks for my Christmas trip, will see how that goes :)

Haggling should be an Olympic sport ;)

A few months ago i wanted a new TV, down to Comet, managed to get £70 off a £500 TV and a pair of 3D Glasses free.

I personally wouldn't bother on small expensive items such as an iPad as the markup is exactly the same everywhere but on TV or appliances there is nowhere you can't haggle.

Never hurts to ask :)
