So, I take a break from work, have a chill and ready myself in that I bought myself a road bike to get to and from work as I want to get lean again, save money, do my bit and not sit in traffic anymore. (Bristol is a nightmare).

So, I am heading into the centre when a woman walks straight into my path from my right and I hit her full on, I went over the bars, smashed my arm and knee up, the bike is a bit battered but will be ok and the lady like me was extremely shaken - all three of us in a heap at the side of the road. I was in so much pain, crying my eyes out, I was literally sick on the spot and people wanted to call an ambulance. I was so worried about my new bike. I spent five minutes sat there, in a daze then got up and went to work where I was sick all day long. :(

You can prepare for cars, buses etc, but when someone walks out in front of you from nowhere and does not even spot you, you have no chance. Just glad it was not a car.:bang::thumbsdown:

For the record, I got to work in 18 minutes but in absolute agony and the tan on my right arm is ruined as all the skin has gone!

Bad luck mate :( Amazed you went to work regardless!

I don't know if it was her fault in this case but so many people walk in front of bikes it's unbelievable - that and swinging passenger doors open in front of you :cuckoo:

Ouch, That happened to me before too. Was giving it loads too as it was on a steep descent, bloke at a crossing decided to step out before the green man lit up. Hope everyones ok !!!!
 
Came off my bike on an icy bit of road once. Fortunately no serious injuries but i distinctly remember feeling like everything went into slowmo as i flew through the air and headed for the cold tarmac :lol:
 
Yeah - odd in that today on my first serious ride to work it became apparent that it is people that you need to most aware of. Crazy. ipods causing people to step out or thinking that 'its only a bike'. Personally, I reckon if I had been going full tilt I could have killed her. Really was that bad.

I know how you feel, I had a jogger step in front of me outside Earls Court Station, difference was I was on a 600cc motorbike...

Yes, pedestrians who don't look are bloody dangerous - and they don't have to be insured either !

Patch yourself up and get back out there on your bike, and look on the bright side. You've had your "off" this year, you've got another 364 days safe riding ahead. :lol:

I was in Bristol today - no it wasn't me.

I feel for you. It's not nice coming of a bike at speed. I've done it a couple times in the past. Once, a woman was reversing out of a parking slot on the side of the road (turns out she was one of these that like to shuffle their car to and fro eight times, to make sure it's parked crooked) and, knowing I was on ice, I just leapt off. Bike and I slide, side by side, for about 30 yds. Second time, the drop handlebars just fell off. Honest, guv. (stop laughing, you lot). I broke my arm and sued the bar*****, manufacturers.
 
Happened to me a few years back as well, except I had a drunk bloke deliberately jump out in front of me and I was going at speed. I hit him square in the stomach and we both went flying through the air. The bike was ok and after I dusted myself off I carried on home. The drunk seemed fine but it was hard to tell really. By the time I got home the adrenaline had worn off and I was feeling a bit sore. I rotated my right arm around and heard lots of cracks. A trip to A&E revealed I'd snapped the clavical right by the shoulder joint with lumps of bone trying to poke their way out. Cracked a few ribs as well. It didn't heal very straight and I've still got a lump on that shoulder and lost a small amount of movement as a result. The main thing I learnt was that broken bones don't hurt nearly as much as a migraine :lol:

Same thing happened to me, I was driving home on my motorbike (at night, in the dark but along a totally clear wide road) when a woman stepped out right in front of me! She was wearing a black top, black skirt, black boots, black tights, had black hair & was carrying a black bag (did I mention the fact that it was dark?)
I hit her at full speed & we both went flying, I absolutely **** myself!! I sat with her until the police arrived at the scene & discovered that the woman was so unbelievably ****ed off her face that she hadn't felt a thing & after the police & ambulance had checked she was ok, she went tottering off home with her bags (which, surprise, surprise, were full of alcohol!)

I was a model citizen & didn't start to find it amusing until I got home & had to say "I'm really sorry I'm late, I've just ran over a drunk woman disguised as a ninja" :lol:

Hope your all right fella.

I was on bus into town once and saw a person do exactly the same as you, the person just stepped out and bam, only that time as I found out later in the day. That pedestrian died at the scene.

i used to be terrible on my bike always falling off, one time me and a couple mates were out on our bikes and cycling quite fast along a country road go to go around a corner and my mate cycles into me. resulting in my bike seat snapping and me getting some stiches in my hand, another time was cycling down through a supermarket carpark,(on a hill) quite quick and the chain locked up and through me over my handle bars, and i was wearing shorts, my knees all scarred. (got up quickly as folk were watching, cycled away trying to be brave) lol.

Ive lost a few friends to motorbike accidents, as well as having my bro left unable to work after being hit head on by a drunk driver ... tried to blame my bro saying he was speeding, tut!

Hope theres not too many scratches on the paintwork, that your 'victim' is ok also .... but oh dear ... doesnt sound good for your poor, poor tan!:gag:

Thanks all, feel ok, but sore, especially my left knee and right arm. Still, all ok overall.

I used to get into central Bristol very early to beat traffic so would get in for about 7.30 and then spend an hour in Starbucks wasting money. I know leave the house at 8.10 ish and I am in by 25 past 8 feeling good and ready for the day.....

Did you get her details, you can claim for any injury to you and damage to the bike, just because she was a pedestrian doesn't mean she isn't responsible for her actions when crossing the road, she'll probably have house insurance which will have a 3rd party liability cover

My thoughts are with you! How awful, Hope you are recovering ok, that is a real shock to the system, take it easy and chill. Fortunately you will all be ok (bike included!)

My first ever accident was a nine year old girl running out in front of my car, luckily for her I was doing less than 30 and her school bag took the hit. She was fine and out playing within hours! my car was nearly written off and I was a state for weeks! :runaway:

2nd thing i hit was a deer ON CHRISTMAS EVE!!!!!!! I cried a lot for quite some time! :'(

I have the brightest flourescent jacket you can buy, and yes pedestrians still cross in front of me.:eek::eek::eek:
 
I'm currently cycling to work, and have yet to fall off, im not gonna touch wood because its inevitable. I used to bail all the time as a teenager, no balance, something to do with growing!!!!! nothing worse than hitting something. Lamp posts are suprisingly solid, and dont bend for you like they do for a car!!!!

WEAR A LID!!!!!!!!!!!
 
can you still buy the german helmets with the spike on the top?

i did the same thing years ago on a motorbike.
£500 damage to the bike. dosy c*w in hospital for six weeks. eventualy had to sue for damages.:suspect:
you could have come out a lot worse i suppose.
if its any cosequence, they dont see me coming with a 13 feet tall , 8 feet wide ORANGE lorry. you havent a chance.
buy an armoured personel carrier.

2 yrs ago I done the same thing on a cycle path, dowy mare stepped out of a gate straight in front of me, swerved to avoid her, and the front wheel bucked, threw me off, she was lucky, totally missed her, but I wasn't so lucky:

broke both wrists, broke my right ankle, slid along and my head hit a metal railing, slipped under it and my shoulder caught on it dislocating it and taking 4 chips out of the joint.

Im lucky I was wearing a helmet.
 
Yeah got to keep your eyes peeled, i lost count of how many people i have nearly hit on the road where they want to step out seeing just a bike, including cars. Then theres the drains and man holes too, some of which are wider then the tyres (run 19mm full race tyres). Then theres the glass on the roads from acidents too, i think the worst crash i had was due to glass right accross the road on a decent at 50mph, must have hit a sharp piece that blow the rear inner tube striaght out on a full lean, steel rims have no grip.

Its a mine field out there for cyclist, never a nice a feeling having a big crash like that, the feeling os sickness is quite normal, but if you start feeling dizy then best see the doctors.
 
Off! Felt that. Although I'm 40 and own a car, I still go on the occasional bike ride purely for leisure. So when I am on my bike, there's normally no need for me to go belting along against the clock, therefore I've not had an accident on it.
However, when I was younger and the pushbike was the only form of transport I had on me, it was a different story. I often rode home for lunch (work was only a ten minute's bike ride) but one afternoon, while I was indoors, I realised I was going to be late getting back for work so I had to really pedal like mad or face a rollocking from the boss. On the way there, as I went belting along this main road, suddenly for no apparent reason the shaft that held the handlebar went loose so there was no way I could correct my steering, so I veered off to one side and smacked straight into a lamp post. Somehow I prevented my head hitting it, but in the process my nuts went straight into the bit that grips the handlebar in place.
My voice returned back to it's normal pitch a week later. Boy, it did bloody hurt. I'm still waiting for my left testicle to come back down again.
 
Hope your ok, it's probably just shock that made you sick.
I haven't cycled to work in just over a year, not actually fallen off but on one very wet day I had a woman step off the kerb in front of me without looking, How I managed to stop on the wet road I don't know. Both wheels were locked and I must have skidded about 15 foot. Frightened the life out of her though.
I've also had my bike fall apart in the middle of a busy cross roads. I went to cycle across the road with cars bearing down on me from both sides. As I pulled up on the handle bars the stem came out of the frame. I found myself in the middle of the road with the wheel hanging off attached by the brake cables, the handle bars still in my hands and the frame dragging on the floor. I gathered it all up as best I could and ran for the otherside of the road. The stem had sheared off for some reason so I couldn't even put it back together. I had to walk about six miles with the bike barely holding together.
 
I always wonder how threads like this get revived, Diego has an accident in April & it pops up again in September :D
 
Hi hope you are OK, i had an accident some 30 years ago i had a Yamaha 250 LC complete with power band at 61/2 thousand, ice snow ruts in road hit power band well the clutch disengaged somehow, i slide for about 20 feet bits flying off the bike pinging off ...ended up under a bus who had stopped in the middle of the junction to watch where i ended up. right under his side window, he look down said are you all right, i mumbled somthing ( it was my pride) hurt, when this old lady came over and said "is this yours sonny it fell off you bike", and handed my seat clip back to me, i said thanks and pushed my bike along the road muttering and a mubleing to myself all the way:lol::lol:
