Had a major Brexit fright today

I’m still looking online for information on car wash employment because I pass them as I drive around, some in rural areas...ie...at a garage ‘way out’ in the countryside along with the current spotlight on them and the ‘slavery’ issue and the most comprehensive and readable is this research carried out by the University of Nottingham. It addresses all the points brought up in this thread.

The page number is top left and I scrolled through to page 5 to start. I was going to highlight the most interesting pages..ie pages 5-6-9-10 but as I read on I found myself reading most of them. For those with speed-reading skills it will be less onerous. I tend to read each and every word of articles in reports like this or in newspapers. Without going back to it and risk losing this page I think it was on page 13..Health and Safety where it stated that the skin of some of the employees resembled that of people with leprosy and another employee was killed by electrocution . On the positive side some employees stated they were satisfied with the wages. Re the status of self-employed which allows employers to avoid certain rights..sick leave -paid holidays etc and not paying NI I read (not in this report) that one practice is the employee supplies his own chamois leather to qualify him as self-employed.

Hopefully John our resident 'naysayers' like @nilagin & @KitsuneAndy will read the linked report you have provided and realise how widespread the problem is.

(Then again I doubt they will admit to it )

I got about 3 pages in. I gave up when it said there is no data on HCWs. How did they manage write the report.
It also said HCW's were virtually non existent before 2004, yet we have one local shopping centre built in 1980 that has operated hand car washes in several of its car parks since day 1. There are another two shopping centres built in 1990, that also had HCWs when they opened. One of those last two shopping centres was an extension of a previous shopping centre that is over 60 years old. It has had a HCW for at least 30yrs.
That's at least half a dozen operating long before 2004 within a 15 mile radius.

Perhaps the bloke who wrote the report was living under a rock prior to 2004.

Interesting. Thanks.

What percentage of car washes are run this way? What other areas of business are used like this?

used tyre bays - notice how many have cropped up in the last 10 years theres at least 3 within a quarter mile of my house
barbers seem to be the latest one in my area there must be at least 5 within half a mile of my house cropped up within the last 5 years
not to mention the fast food joints everywhere like we need 3 curry houses kebab shops within a 100 yards of each other selling exactly the same stuff

i'm sure you can work out the purpose of these businesses

Yes Mark - a local large tyre business had a burglary recently where the offenders broke in through the roof; the offenders were caught on the CCTV and emptied the depot during the five hours they were there. Two 17 tonne HGV's called and were loaded up during the burglary, the Police told the owner the tyres would be sold to small back street garages.

I think any business that can do 'cash in hand' deals are very suspect and as you say the growth in this area is alarming - it's frightening to think how many poor soles are being trafficked and how much it is costing the UK tax payer.

We had two part worn tyre shops around 20yrs or more ago, both closed down many years ago and now we don't have any. If an abundance of similar shops is an indication of crime, it's all coffee shops/ cafes and charity shops around here.
The only signs of crime is the local council having done away with 1/2hr free parking and the minimum charge gone up from £1 to £1.50. Plus the ticket machines never work so people have to pay over the phone, which charges more than the cost would have been at the ticket machine.

Sometimes Neil you would be better off not taking part in discussions you know nothing about and completely ignore evidence - you make yourself look like a complete Prat!

No worn tyre shops round here. Can't remember seeing one anywhere for years.

Normal number of barber shops in a 5 mile radius and a fair few fast food joints in the main student area.

Shed loads of betting shops though.

Guess I must be a prat too!

:D:D:D

The difference is you haven't continued to ignore the evidence presented about the tradgedy of human trafficking; so you're not a Prat (I'm sorry if it came across that way TBH) :)

So other than kindly informing us of what you were told in the sauna, we can safely assume you have informed the authorities and the two gentlemen are now serving time, or been deported and their operations have been shut down.

Not on your life! I have a lot more sense than that!

But it is ok for you to ignore my evidence.
You carry on hiding behind your keyboard.

Looking at last nights results better get my car washed, it may be the last time ;)

Do not worry, Mike! I am not going anywhere; I can help with washing your car. We, Eastern Europeans, like hard work; it may be a nice break from teaching, too. ;)

You have no need to tell me how hard Eastern Europeans work, i took early retirement from my proper job then did 10 years agency working, the biggest majority were hard working people willing to do any job for as many hours as needed.

You haven't provided any!
As much as simon was, but you will take his word for it, because he isn't me.
Go take your Justin Timberlake act elsewhere and tell it to someone who cares.

I'm not really going to respond because it's quite obvious you just post lies to get a response then when you are found out you become abusive then get me a suspension from a thread!
Yesterday you were continually trying to wind members up by repeatedly stating you hadn't voted for 40yrs subsequently getting yourself banned again for trolling. Now this morning you are liking posts made on the GE result?
I do find human trafficking harrowing - it's a shame you don't; that's all I've got to say.

I only stated that I haven't voted in almost 40yrs just the once. If that winds people up, that is a poor reflection on them, not me. I am lost as to why it should wind up anybody.
You got yourself banned from a thread.
I have a right to like someones post if I like it's content. It's what the like button is for. I am not going to lose sleep over your paranoia, that is for you to deal with not me.
You say I am lying, yet you are willing to take someone else's word on car washes, part worn tyres, barbers etc. where they live, again, a reflection on you, not me.
