Wedding tomorrow. Just found that my 40d wont go onto centre focus which I always use. I dont even know how it is on all focus points as I never use that... but I cant change it back.

Ive changed lenses.. to no avail.
Ive changed the ways to set the focus point.. but no change.
I have reset all camera settings but no change.

Any more ideas? :shake:

On Nikons, there is a switch that locks focus area selection. It's caught me out a few times.

Anything similar on the 40D?

Well there are different ways of changing it... but the one I usually use isnt working so I have tried the other ways but they dont work either.

Hmmm... best wait for someone with a 40D then. Hope it's something simple :D

Take the battery out and then re-insert and try again.

If this dosn't work you could always try resetting to the manufactures default settings (remember to make sure you know what your settings are before hand though).

Ive done both those things, Chris. :|

don't know the 40D, but the 5D has a button top right on the back panel
push, then use either control wheel to select
hth

ps
you're not in green square (full auto) mode are you - it happens!

Does the same problem occur with all lenses?

If not it may be the pins?

what about taking both batteries out for a few moments (apologies if that's what Crhis meant).

SORTED! it had knocked from manual on the top dial, which I always use, to that silly A-DEP thing!

Phew!!!

Thanks for you help guys.

time to get a back up camera for paying work just in case - like the above?

glad you got it sorted - TP is great at times

I have been caught out by damn A-DEP 4 or 5 times now - probably should learn what it is for but it does make you think your camera is arsed as it does pretty much nothing in that mode!

(as it happens I was going to suggest checking which mode you are in :p )

You Wally :eek::eek::eek:

:lol::lol::lol:

Glad it's sorted though

Good luck, fun, success for tomorrow

Jimmy, set it to ADEP, then try photographing three people such that they are one in front of the other. It will select the widest apperature that will just get all of them in focus

Where are you located? You can have my D200 for the day, if your close enough? Not long had a sensor clean either!

Aww thanks, Gary... but I sorted it a while back! Was the top dial turned from manual to A-DEP. Thanks for your kind gesture though.

And Fracster... whats C E B?

A-DEP is actually quite a potentially useful mode. I can't say I've used it, but I think the correct way to use the mode is to point the camera at the nearest part of your scene you wish to be in focus and half press the shutter button to focus on that part of the scene. The viewfinder display starts flashing and the camera 'remembers' that distance. Now point the camera at the furthest part of your scene you want in focus and focus on that. The camera computes the aperture to achieve DOF between those two points.

Not heard of A-DEP before, but yes I can see that being useful sometimes

How long before cameras have this function...?

[Talks to camera]

"D23/23D... I want a shot of a landscape with only the foreground in focus, find a fab foreground point of interest and 45 degree harsh light, shoot at about 15mm. I'm thinking Scotland or the Lake District. Email me your shots as you go so I can see if you're on the right track. Off you go then, be careful and mind the road"

[Opens door to let camera set off for Scotland/Lakes]

:D

Think CT that is the 'proper' DEP mode of the EOS-3 etc, A-DEP is kind-of cut-down version which selects the focus points automatically in one hit from what I understand, well that's how it works on the 3000V anyway.
