Gumtree ridiculousness

Lmao clearly has no clue about his product.

Whats more amazing.. 373 people have paid for one :gag:

After looking at the purchases, they all paid a much lower price... weird?

Gumtree is the nigerian scammers dream site,i recently sold a mobile phone and listed it on there and was inundated with e-mails from people wanting me to post it to nigeria for their son.

The big ebay sellers just put up the price when they run out of stock instead of canceling the listing. When they come back in stock the price goes down and they start selling again.

To be honest, I've never used gumtree, but with the rep it seems to be getting lately, i don't think i ever will.

Why is this ? I was selling some small bits n bobs so I thought I'd try out gumtree in my local area ,and I had this guy on about his sick granny and told me aye told me!! to open up a PP account for him to pay me ,and could I send it to Nigera as he was working away from home on a building site . Where do they come from?, and is there any way to prevent them ?

This reads much better when my subconscious translates it into Private James Frazer

Sorry! :D

Yes, Gumtree is 100% guaranteed pure undiluted freshly canned scam. Stay away.

Gumtree is fine providing you aren't stupid. Avoid the dodgy sellers, meet up in a public place and you're fine. Don't ever give your home address out especially if you're selling valuable stuff.

I've sold and bought plenty and it's all been fine. Even managed to pick up a few bargains from it.

I bought some wheels for my car through gumtree
I'd heard about people being ready to pounce because they know you have cash so was wary
When the satnav tried sending me up a narrow lane I rang the guy up
Yes that's correct it's the house at the top
When I got there he came out, the house must have been worth a million quid

Look at the revisions:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemRevisionDetails&_trksid=p4340.l2569&item=290373952199

I guess that lots purchased it at the lower price, then the seller put the price up.
When browsing to the page, someone will see that >300 people have purchased it, and assume that the price cannot be wrong,

or more logical is he ran out of stock so upped the price till he had more or like we do we have certain items on price structure but on a weekend they tend not to watch so we drop price sell lots then up t sunday night before our suppliers see what we are doing

Just bumping this thread because I've seen a rather creative description for an old Nikon 35mm f/1.4 lens:

http://www.gumtree.com/p/lenses/nikkor-35mm-f-1.4-n-non-ai-exquisite-and-rare/1115822430

"It has a slight yellow filter (built within the lens) that encourages the use in black and white.
It really is a unique piece."

That's probably the most creative way I've seen yellowing of the lens described - a built-in yellow filter!

(n.b. many of the Nikon lenses from that era had thorium elements which is the most likely source of the yellowing - but they definitely were not yellow coming out of the factory)

I was looking for a 500mm F4 and by chance did a search on Gumtree. Found one with 30 miles at a good price and bought it (face to face) a few days later.

Guy selling it was spot on and I spent a few hours with him talking about photography and drinking tea :)

So it worked for me.

Dave.
