Am I just being a tad paranoid? Ive arranged to sell something for £25 (an old Humax PVR recorder jobby). The intended buyer is now saying he wants to meet me at Asda car park to collect the item and pay.
Anything else Ive sold on gumtree they just come to my house and take it.
Should I be worried? Probably not.
I suppose its possible he doesnt have a car and wants to meet somewhere on a bus route but as he doesnt know where I live yet, seems a tad odd.

Cheers!

Maybe he's just being over cautious on his part and wants to meet somewhere 'public' - who knows?

For a larger value item I might be a bit concerned, but for £25 I think I'd just go with the flow, as long as he's not suggesting meeting in the dead of night when everything is closed and locked up or anything weird like that !!!

As its an electrical item you'd think he might at least want to see it plugged in and switched on wouldnt you? But hey ho. We shall see.

Possibly a silly question, but are you sure it's a he?
Maybe, if female, they might, as mentioned above, just want to meet somewhere public.
Just a thought.

In SA - where I've spent most of my life - I would take precautions, but I doubt if I'd bother in the UK for something like this. Take someone with you if you feel uncomfortable, or suggest somewhere else to meet? Coffee shop?

Definitely a he, spoke on phone.

You get all sorts of weirdos on gumtree, I'll just meet him (if he actually shows up) and take a chance. Hardly worth him arranging a 'hit' for a £25 Humax is it. (Famous last words)

If you're not back by tea time, we'll send out a squad.

The fact that you have posted on here shows that you have concerns. I would not ignore that instinct. If you are going by car then you'll have something much more valuable to nick than your £25 Humax.

That is true. But he could just as easily nick that at my home address I suppose. I intend to park a distance away then walk and meet him at the entrance to the store. If he starts saying he doesnt want to do that I'll then bale. What I need is to take along with me a big ugly bruiser with tattooed forearms and a face like a welders jumper for backup. Viv, are you free later?

Of course sweetheart.....always happy to protect a big girl's blouse...Mwah!

If it's a busy carpark, then why worry? Park close to the store itself, so there will be people about. And bring a baseball bat :D

it wouldnt be the first time someone has gone to pick up goods from an address and ended up getting robbed so i can see the concern.

but as said, as long as its a busy car park during day time i cant see the bother.

If it does actually happen I'll report in. Feel as though I need a coiled bit of plastic cord running down the back of my ear and to speak into my jacket sleeve when I go really.
"Contact is outside asdas, moving in with the humax now"

Free? Ruth's never free but she may be available at a special discounted rate!

Done this myself before. I sold a mobile phone and the person buying wanted to meet in a carpark. I thought it was bit dodgy at first, but all went well.

It does help if you are a fairly burley looking skin-head though, I find (y)

:hug:park as close as possible to the entrance it will be covered by cctv.thats as long as the store is open 24hrs and its also not a local dogging site .

pity i,m so far away it would have been worth going along just for the larf :pompous:

I've met someone to buy a laptop in a motorway services car park before. That was a few hundred pounds

I bought a lens from a guy in a carpark - well, obviously he wasn't just there selling a lens, it was an arranged meet :D - it was only down the road from my house. He rang for directions along the way, and I asked him to come to the house, as he was pretty close, but he opted to pull into a carpark and asked me to meet him there. I wasn't worried, he had all positive reviews on the site I use and it was the carpark of a pub I knew well.

I only buy or sell to people with at least a few positive feedback reviews, it's just a little added security. More so when buying though.

I've done most of my Gumtree buying/selling by meeting in a car park or a McDonalds or similar.

I don't like the idea of walking into a strange house (especially for an expensive item) without an idea of who is there, with a few hundred pounds in my pocket (and the stranger in the house being aware I have the cash).

I've even bought and sold with forum members here by meeting in a car park on a few occasions ;).

OUCH! LOL

if your worried arrive a little late so you have a chance of seeing who your dealing with before you park the car
you should be fine it's a public enough place

my last buy from here was dealt with on a motorway service station to save me a few mile off the journey
i saw nothing untoward with the meeting place it was just a matter of convenience

I'd go a little early and have a coffee in the cafe. Txt him to tell him where you are. Much more public in there.

But, if you're feeling paranoid about this........ Have you considered that you may be getting burgled whilst at Asda?

:arghh: ................ A £25 sale does not seem worth it for all the worry. Just chip the damned Humax into the bin.

Paranoid is pushing it slightly. Ive just never had a request like this before. As now seems evident from other replies it is fairly common. This is all I wanted to know.

As to getting burgled, well as he hasnt got a scooby where I live, so not paranoid about being burgled by him, no.

...what if he follows you home :nailbiting:

Thats a great way to put Keith mind at rest :D
I'm sure he appreciated the thought. :D

Just be glad it is not the public toilets :p

Seriously don't be a nice guy and don't give him a lift that is on your way. I had it once where he suggested he broke down and could I get him back to his car. It didn't feel right at all so I refused. On my way I drove past where it was supposed to be and surprise surprise it wasn't there....

Be careful.

The only time I got [nearly] attacked in Glasgow was in Asda car park . Little s*** got scared and ran away.

I listed my old phone on gumtree last night and already feel sorry for it. I got some weird Glaswegians calling at midnight, asking for apparently a home delivery service. :p F-off was the answer. Gumtree was doable in Bristol, but not in this hole.

Well I've not heard a peep out of the geezer now since yesterday morning. Most odd.
