I can spell antidisestablishmentarianism
When I was at primary school, we were given the task of finding out the meaning of that word, and learning how to spell it.
I was the only one who found out both, and learnt the ability to say it fluently.
I was 6 years old. Mind you, I did read the Jaws novel when I was 5, and also got moved up a year in primary school
Mind you it's fallen apart in recent years. I was offered a state funded place at a grammar school (they offered 1 place a year for the whole borough, my mum applied for me and i got it, but I didnt want to go :bang: )
Anyway, I never really did the Uni thing (only one year), opting to work in dead end jobs after that (for the most part)
However, I can honestly say my primary education was the best I could have had, I was taught proper English and grammar (although it doesn't show half the time on the forums). Just basic stuff that kids don't know nowadays.
I used to get 100% on spelling tests etc etc all the time, but the one word I have a problem with recently is definitely, for some reason I've always typed definately. Strange.
You think the spelling is bad? You want to try having an MSN conversation with my 16 yr old niece, or my 13 yr old nephews. I am sometimes truly disgusted.
It used to be a case of "txt speak", which meant they wrote like that because it's quicker / more characters to fit into a text (which got carried over to MSN), but now they're replacing words with phonetic spellings which often have the same or MORE letters.....
I blame MTV, it was the start of it all
