Yes
This is probably a daft question and totally off topic, but what the heck.

For more than 10 years now I've had the same hair cut and fancy a change. Problem is I have a job where I need to meet clients so I can't look too scruffy.

My normal haircut is a no. 2 all over, I let it grow for a month where it gets fairly long and looks a bit messy, try to let it grow, give in and get it shaved off. This time, I don't want to start over.

I'm after shoulder length hair eventually but growing it past the first month it gets almost uncontrollable, so I'm just wondering if anybody can offer some advice?

I suppose if nothing can be done, it's Winter so I can throw a hat on outside when meeting clients...

Scruffy hair is the new neat hair lol, use gel.wax and texture it to look scruffy but neat :)

Straightners..
Seriously.

I havent had a proper hair cut for over 15 years. Hair is currently about arse length.
There is the point where it starts hitting your eyes, which is really annoying. Just put up with it and let it keep going.
I tend to keep mine tied up most of the time now, out of the way.

These were taken in 2006, I havent had it cut since then, just trimmed.

I had a number 1 all over for about 4 years.

Stopped having it shaved about 6 months ago and just let it grow.

I have kept the sides and back trimmed every 2 weeks just so that is keeps some sort of style to it.

Once the top is as long as I want it, I'm going to let the sides and back grow. As bove, mess is the new neat!

Just stick with it mate.

I regularly change from short to long hair. I too have a period of "wild" hair but a bit of manga head (fructis wax/gel) it's quite easy to manage.
once a bit longer.......GHD's all the way

I have a no 2 all over about every 5 weeks or when it starts to look like a big grey bog brush

I tried growing it but couldn't get past the bog brush stage

Wow, didn't expect so many replies so quickly, thanks!!

Problem with my hair is it just sticks up and takes some going to keep it down. I can gel it back then it just starts going back up in a few mins so I tend not to bother.

Found a hair style site for men (coolmenshair.com ) and the look I'm after is pretty much the same this.

Just going to need to perservere with it and not let the scruffy style bother me.

I'd straighten it then use a product to get the quiffy bit, brycream (sp?) alwats worked for me during the wild and scruffy stages.
I just let mine hang loose and free now, the weight of it pulls it down straight. My wife is jealous my hair is longer than hers!

I always wet my hair then put gel on it. The combination of the 2 together makes it do what I want.

Be aware that if your hair is quite thick and wiry then growing it may be very difficult, and you'll basically end up with an affro. Even with GHD's my hair still doesn't straighten particularly well - I gave up trying to go grow it long and just settled for the shorter curly style which it naturally falls into anyway. Be aware that if you do grow it you will have to maintain it a lot more. I don't do early mornings so that was another reason for me to abandon that plan

You don't have to have it shaved though every time you want it shortened, I personally much prefer scissor cuts.

I think we may need photographs to advise properly :naughty:

if it grows up, why not actually gel it that way to begin with until the weight is enough to pull down, use the gel to give some separation and 'deliberate' just got out of bed effect?

Just started growing mine again recently after about 15 years of regular #1 cuts.
I used to have it right down my back in my yoof.
I'm now just about at the Florence stage (remember Magic Roundabout) but determined to stick it out.
Can't use gel to keep it down as wearing my bike lid produces VERY odd results on getting to work! ;o)
Keep at it, you'll be glad you did in 12 months. Next winter will be lovely and warm.

I was similar to that when I was a LOT younger  Also had the Charlie Nicholas perm look at one stage :$

Nowadays it's just a #2 on the back and sides and a short scissor cut on top.

Bizarre timing - I just decided to try and let mine grow beyond a #0 (sides) + #2 (top) for the first time in 30 years...

I may cave in another week or so - it's been 5 weeks and I look like a bog-brush already...

This is the longest it usually gets: after about 4 weeks' growth...

I had a similar problem, uncontrollable hair.
Its just brown and dry but never seemed to go where I wanted it.
Rather than shaving short I got a job where very long hair is accepted.
Shoulder length would be a girlie nightmare, stay away from that James May territory.
When I need to look smart my wife plaits it, sort of 18th-Century style I guess. Quite smart really.
Beard is mandatory though ... not sure you want to go the whole hog.

I think it's time we embrace the horror and reclaim what is rightfully ours...

"...she likes them with a moustache, race-track season-pass, drivin' in a Trans-Am...does the mullet make the man...? Like a bad movie, she's lookin' thru me...if you were me then you'd be screamin someone shoot me..."

So are we gonna have some state-of-play pics and an update at xmas? ;o)

I had long hair when I was student - a long time ago - but its been quite short since then. Easy to wash/dry and doesn't get untidy. There's another benefit for me too. I'm 57, no signs of hair receding yet, but I have gone grey and short hair makes it a bit less obvious!

WHAT.

Long hair is gorgeoussssss!

Thanks again for all the replies everyone.

That is an awesome song, along with 1985. Don't know about the mullet though...

Hmmm... We'll see how it looks by then, definetly no current ones. I can promise one when its fully grown and cut though.

I have the same issue regarding gel, if I'm on site I normally have a hard hat on, in the office though I can gel it back no problem. I'm not that fussed about how it looks in the office as I don't meet clients there, its really just on site. That's were the hat comes in though! Hopefully it will be long enough by Spring to look tidy, without hiding it.

Surely for straightners its gonna need to be pretty long though, at the moment its only about 1".

Strange that such a thread like this one has cropped up as I, too, am planning to let my hair grow after years of having had grade 1 cuts. Not had it cut in three months.
Just lucky that even though I'm 43, I haven't gone bald! I've also not had a shave in 10 months, so I've got some serious facial fuzz, but I love it! (and it keeps me warm when riding my motorbike during these long winter months).
When people have commented on my hairy looks, my excuse was that I got bored with the way I've been looking for years and that the messy disheveled look is in . . . and it seems that I am right.

Im the same I have had a skin head for the last 10 years but I have recently been growing it and last week i went to a proper mens hairdressers for a hair cut and style and now i look fit as lol.

Good to hear there are a few others in the situation growing their hair, definetly going to let it grow and live with the mess for a short while.

Can't wait until it's long enough to gel back though, the sides are almost there but the top needs a little longer, still sticks back up in seconds...

Go for an emo do lol for the laughs.

Had long hair for years and it got to be a real PITA, so now have a #1 buzz cut every few weeks. Take 2 bottles into the shower? Nah! A bar of soap does me from head to toe these days!

Still got my pony tail somewhere - my wife plaitted it before she snipped it off.
