Before the invention of the camera, moment capturing would involve a violent posse of ninja warriors armed with butterfly nets and lassoes. Keep precious seconds safe with today’s Groupon: £19 for a six hour digital photography essentials course with Photo Linaker

A professional photographer since the sepia tinted year of 1983, David Linaker has since built up a successful portraiture company and now bestows his knowledge upon eager amateurs with a range of specialised photography courses. The classes, which range from beginner starter sessions to glamour, fashion and wedding photography are all taught from the comfort of Linaker’s modern barn studio as well as on ventures on location throughout the Thames valley.

Groupon grippers are invited on an expedition into the pixelated world of the digital camera with a photography essentials course for beginners comprised of three hours of theory and three hours of practical learning on location. Happy snappers will acquire technical knowledge about white balance, how to reduce noise in digital pictures and how to adjust shutter speed, ISO and aperture with a theory class before letting lenses loose in either Winsor Castle, Thames walks or Saville gardens. The course is aimed towards those who have already bought digital cameras and would like some extra guidance in how to maximise their potential with technical and stylistic advice.

I purchased this today as well, not sure if it will be any good, but I thought for £19, it's got to worth a go, even if it just helps me to get my head around the book I started reading today, "Understanding Exposure" - by Bryan Peterson.

I'd like to understand how to use my camera in Manual mode, before I get too reliant on the auto settings!

I've just purchased the offer as well.

Just like to say a quick thanks to the OP for bringing it to my attention.

I'm thinking about it! Only up the road from me aswell.....

For 19 quid if your local you can't go wrong! Even just for the day out with some other toggers.

Went on the linker course today and really enjoyed it. I didn't learn a huge amount in the morning theory session apart from the history and how bits work. The afternoon was great, taking some photos and trying out different things.

A lot of the people on the course haven't read the manual, any books or tried anything other than auto mode. He started at the beginning and covered all the basics and went into stuff like exposure lock and white balance.

We also had a quick play/watch in the studio with light painting etc.

Overall a great day!

I think the really interesting thing you may learn is how much money he loses by doing the Groupon offer

Yes and No, 14 people today at grouping prices is £266 a day. Do that 3 days a week, 4 weeks a month and you are into 3K a month. You can only use grouping prices on his beginners course.

He still does portraits, personalized training and studio hire.

I think he does pretty well playing the numbers game :)

Thanks OP, I ordered it too :) Fingers crossed he can help with some of the more technical things.

The last photography course I had booked through Groupon was a disaster. I had purchased vouchers for £19 to attend a course at the Ikon Studio in Digbeth, Birmingham. I found it very difficult getting through to the company after numerous attempts for 2 months, in the end I gave up and asked for a refund. Groupon did acknowledge the difficulties as I was not the only one, they gave me a refund in vouchers!

ahhh yes! Groupon. the way forward to ruin your business. do a deal with them and watch the punters only take the freebie and Groupon take what money there was....

Or did any one ever have success from using them? Not heard of one yet.

I've often wondered about that as you only hear the bad experiences on here  personally I've never set foot on the site maybe I'm missing out  Interesting I'm sure I read somewhere that Inspire e.g. EdinburghGary had been doing groupon so maybe it would be interesting to learn his experience of it

She runs a variety if businesses then ;)

I've never heard of anything good from this... Yes great for those going to venues and using them....

But for those whose biz is offering the deals? Nope view togs I know have lost out and few Restaurants have lost out big time as the Gen public have not spent extra and only taken the cheapo deal or the freebie..

It seems to have back fired for thiose that I hhave known.

Great for Groupon..... I won't be doing cheapo deals throught them.

Pat? Did she buy any extras above and beyond the original deal? The whole point is to get people in once you have them , get them to spend more.....

Should have said 'purchased'

In some instances yes, on others no.

The teeth whitening thing was a pack to DIY at home. It was about £25 but was something like 75% off RRP (or so they say). I didn't see a massive difference but her vanity was quashed for a little while ;) Whether she'll do it again and if she does, it's the same company offering the deal then I can't be sure.

The spa thing I don't know anything about so can't comment on extras. I know she wen away one day and came back the next, banging on about massages and bubble baths. I on the other hand had the pleasure of a teething child :)

One of the overnighters was to a local golf course hotel where they were doing some silly deal on a meal and glass of champers as a christmas party deal for a minimum of something like 12 people. They ended up shelling out for additional bottle of booze and all the girls booked a room at a reduced rate that was offered with the deal at time of booking. The room worked out cheaper than a taxi for many of them so it made sense, something like £35 each for the room.

Otherwise, I tend not too ask too many questions about what she gets up to ;)

Not necessarily: that assumes he's receiving all of the £19, which certainly isn't the case with Groupon, who normally take anything from 50% share upwards.

Hopefully the guy applied a sensible limit to the number of slots available at that price.

Carrying on from this Necro :P

Has anyone else been on the course, i'm booked up for next saturday to go on it. Wondering what other people have thought about it...

Hi Simon

I have attended that course, I must say it is very basic but gets you out for a day with other toggers whilst hearing info from someone else to make sure you are on the right tracks.

The course was how to use your camera in Manual mode. So getting to no A,S and iso etc...

Then went for a little walk and use cameras out side to play with DOF in A mode.

On the whole not bad for £19 but didnt really learn anything new and nothing to really see on the walk. But i did go when it was icey.

Hope it helps
