Morning all,

I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in a print exchange following the same basic premise as the APUG exchanges? This could encourage people to actually print their photos and is a great way to share what everyone is doing away from the restrictions of small size and web displays.

The rules:

  • minimum 8" print (8x8, 8x10 etc)
  • borders allowed but no taking the mickey
  • artistic nude only, otherwise print can be any subject
  • sign up until end of Feb, prints to be sent by end March
  • send/receive 1-5 prints
  • digital prints allowed, don't want to put anyone off

Who to send to:
  • raathistle -> Zeroeseight
  • A1ex2001 -> LeeP
  • Freester -> Geordi69
  • Cathald -> raathistle
  • Ifotou -> Grant
  • Ghandi -> Ekimeno
  • Ekimeno -> Cathald
  • Grant -> Freester
  • Zeroeseight -> Ghandi
  • Geordi69 -> A1ex2001
  • LeeP -> Ifotou

While it sounds interesting, I remember seeing a picture posted for crit that was going to be sent out to US under a similar scheme. The picture was iffy and the poster thought it was great - Wouldn't accept any probs with the pic, just that it's printed now and looks great. I'd have been well annoyed to have received that in the post!

I know that everyone rates different things, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I know that it may open your eyes to something that you may never have considered, but to get something in the post with excited trepidation, open it up and it's yuk :eek:

The flip side is of course you may love it - But I am a pessimist at heart and know I'd end up with some badly printed, blurred piece of rubbish that somone else thought was art!!

Have I said enough?!! Rant over!!

Prints are so cheap these days that it's not like you'd have lost anything and someone might send you a master piece.

I am never that lucky - Try the lottery and never win, buy a scratchcard and am excited if I win £1!!! Trust me, I'd end up with the white elephant of the photography world!!

I'm in a print exchange on another forum and it has been cut into two groups
1 group for a digital print
1 group for a darkroom print

Thats the problem with these and unfortunately there's no way to regulate this other than trust. Perhaps a restriction on a minimum post count, but if someone is sad enough to want to ruin it i doubt there's any way round it:annoyed:

How many people are you thinking for this group 10? 20?
You could split into groups of 5 or more and you print out 5 or so copies
That way you are getting more than one print and more likely to get a few decent prints
This way if you do get a poor image(mine)at least you know a few more are on the way

Cathal

Thats not a bad idea, split it into cells of 5, send a print to 4 people, get 4 back.

Alternatively, what about a huge group and you sign up to send out 1-4 prints and get the same number of prints back. that way if someone only wants to send 1 out they can, but if someone wants to send/receive more they can as well :thumbs:

If people are up for it I'll have a play at working out how the allocations would work

I'm in a print exchange on another forum and it has been cut into two groups
1 group for a digital print
1 group for a darkroom print

We could do that if lots of people want to play, or if people are particularly adverse to receiving one or the other. depends on how many want in

Sounds interesting. Seeing stuff in print rather than on screens, which vary so much.

That all seems a bit formal to me, with the special paper and voting and the like. The idea was to get people sharing what they're doing and proud of without any pressure, like an extension of the forum.

The group you linked to does look interesting but from a different aspect

I'm up for it. I'd be sending prints I've done in the darkroom.

How about getting a list started for whoever is interested
Name and type of print they will be using
I am new to film and will be a bit nervous of sending someone one of my prints but I suppose it would all be part of the learning and I have not developed a print in the darkroom yet so it could be a neg scanned and printed on the epson

Cathal

So it seems like there's a few people up for giving it a go, what size print are we going to say?

I would suggest a minimum of an 8" print (so 8"x8", 8"x10", 8"12 etc.). You can send larger if you want to but don't expect anything bigger than 8" in return. What about borders, is an 8x10 with a 1" border ok?

Prints to be of any subject?

I would suggest a set timescale for sign up, with a target of prints to be mailed a week or fortnight after the close of sign up.

Do we allow anonymous sending or not?

I'm happy to organise the allocating of people to mail to, if we do allow anonymous postings that would require centralising the addresses to be sent out at the same time as who to send it to, or if not I can just give you the names and you sort it out between yourselves?

In summary then:

1) minimum print size?
2) borders or not, if yes how big?
3) restrictions on content (nudity etc?)
4) how long?
5) anonymous

1) minimum print size?

8" sounds good. Any larger and post starts to get awkward/expensive.

2) borders or not, if yes how big?

Yes, but nothing ridiculous. I think you can leave this one to peoples judgement.

3) restrictions on content (nudity etc?)

Same as the Glamour Sub-forum? Artistic Nude stuff only.

4) how long?

Bi-monthly? Any less and it may be tricky for some of us to produce a decent print. Anymore an it'll get forgotten about I think.

5) anonymous

Can't see any reason for it to be this way. Plus it will mean more organising on your part.

Count me in btw! :)

I'm in! Though everything I'm doing is MF, self dev'd, scanned and printed digitally. Turns out OK...

How do we go about finding out who to send what to? Is it going to be a random name pulling?

I've got aspreadsheet that will work it out so once we've got the names sorted I can post up a list of who to send to

Edited first post

All good then!

I'm actually really looking forward to this as it will encourage me to start producing some quality prints and working at that being the final medium!

Me too please :)

Its about time I started getting out and about with the camera!

Cathald - you have PM :D

...now the agonising task of deciding which one to print...

I'm just going through that process myself:gag:

Amazingly I found I've been given some fibre based paper in a recent job lot buy so I might have a try on that for my final print :clap:

Just PMed you raathistle and ekimeno

Just to clarify, is it for example:

ekimeno - Cathald (ie. I sent a print to Cathald)
Gandhi - ekimeno (ie. Gandhi sends to me)

or is it that I'm sending a print to both Gandhi and Cathald and receiving from both of them? :thinking:

I interpreted it as you send to Cathald and Ghandi sends to you (slightly jealous of that one).

lol.

I'd wait until you actually get the print before you start getting all excited!

Its a whole different world in print ;)

Personaly, there isn't anybody in the exchange I wouldn't be happy to get a print from!

Yeah, it's that way round, unless you want to send an extra bonus print :naughty:

I'll update the first post with arrows

In the original post, it says send 1 to 5 prints. How does this work, or are we just sending a print each?

I sent A1ex2001 a PM on wednesday for their address to which I need to send the prints, I still have not heard anything back.

Bump

What is happening with this? It seems to ground to a halt!!!

What I will suggest is to go ahead and sort out your print and if you haven't heard anything from alex by the end of the month then I can send you one, I've been in a dilema over which print to send so if there's no response I can send you the other one :D

You don't need to send one, I will be recieving one anyway, but will anybody else need another print sending to them?
Got prints allready sorted. Been having a good play about at college!!:)
