I have been invited to a friends family christening and asked if I could take a few photographs. Never done group shots before so a bit of advice needed on camera set up. What would be your focus point in the group and what would be the best aperture to use? They are basically the two sections I need advice on. Flash may be used depending on weather conditions but hope they would all be taken outdoors.
Thanks
Ian

as they are going to be lined up side by side you can still use a reasonably shallow aparture. but id say to be save shoot at a couple off diff ones and make sure one of those is f8. again this is dependant on your focal length as this will affect compression

Thanks for that Phil. I plan to do groups of 3/4 people max and not huge family groups. Using a 50mm prime lens mainly but will stick my 24-105 in my bag as well so should get close enough

When doing stuff like this, i tend to take a few shots of the general surroundings to check the lighting and iso settings before actually taking the shots of the people.

Churches can be very dull places with regards to natural light.

Thanks for all the advice. Did take some in the church which were a bit dark, flash not allowed but managed to rescue them in PP
