GM and Ford are trying to determine if they have used any metal that has had the data falsified.

Well the worst I've got to be worried about is my Ralliart strut braces, though being 20 years old I don't suppose it's actually affected!

We had quite a few instances of falsified records for material quality when I worked on oil and gas projects.

Not a new thing years ago the doors rotted out on a ford seirra we had apparently due to dodgy metal
Decided then to never buy another ford
Next car was a pergeot kept that for many years not a hint of rust

Had similar issues in the building industry.
One project being supplied by a Chinese contractor insisting on using Chinese steel, ended up having to get all steel used on the project tested independently for our own peace of mind. These was no confirmation that any of the certificates provided by the mill were falsified, but there was definitely a lack of trust, better safe than sorry.

I recall a similar incident where thermal packers manufactured in China destined for use in Australia contained asbestos.

If I've understood the link correctly it affects quite a few car manufacturers and is aluminium parts not steel

The list of manufacturers involved (as given in the article) include Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Suzuki, Ford, Mazda, Subaru and Mitsubishi although Suzuki say none of their products contain any affected materials. Steel isn't mentioned in the thread title - just metal - in this case, Aluminium and copper.
