Decided then to never buy another ford
Next car was a pergeot kept that for many years not a hint of rust
Had similar issues in the building industry.
One project being supplied by a Chinese contractor insisting on using Chinese steel, ended up having to get all steel used on the project tested independently for our own peace of mind. These was no confirmation that any of the certificates provided by the mill were falsified, but there was definitely a lack of trust, better safe than sorry.
I recall a similar incident where thermal packers manufactured in China destined for use in Australia contained asbestos.
The list of manufacturers involved (as given in the article) include Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Suzuki, Ford, Mazda, Subaru and Mitsubishi although Suzuki say none of their products contain any affected materials. Steel isn't mentioned in the thread title - just metal - in this case, Aluminium and copper.
