i have a couple of cheap Bessell boxes but I love my Rotalux, just oozes quality. I would dearly like a grid for it but the only option I can see is a lighttool egg crate at a whopping £300. Are there any other alternatives?

Elinchrom do make their own grids, called Rotagrids, but they are very limited. I think there may only be 3 of them for square/rectangular softboxes. Certainly none for strip lights which is where they would be very useful. For the price of a LightTools EzPop grid you could probably buy a Profoto box and grid with an Elinchrom fitting.

You could adapt others if you could overcome the problem of there being no obvious place to Velcro a grid to on a Rotabox.

An additional disadvantage of the Rotalux grids are you have to dismantle the softbox to fit them which destroys the whole convenience thing about Rotalux softboxes in my view.

Thanks for the input everyone. I shall have a look into it a little more.

I've not seen a profoto box but assume as good as the Rotalux in terms of quality, only issue is that they're not a quick assembly solution which is the big pro for me of the elinchrom.

Yes and no, the Profoto softboxes are actually fairly generic, well made generic but still... in fairness since they dropped the prices on the change from RF to RFi they're not so expensive that it seems desperately unreasonable.

Rotalux softboxes have clearly had some effort put into their design but you'll rarely find an old one without some separation of the reflective material which doesn't really happen (or at least as badly) with other brands.

The new Profoto OCF softboxes have a speedring with a similar design to the Rotalux one, they may eventually have something for the entire range but most of the alternatives are in no way an improvement on the Rotalux range.

I was suggesting Profoto as a cost effective alternative. If you really want to use Elinchrom then buy an Ezpop grid and just grin and bear the cost. The Ezpop has the advantage of being fittable just like grids on other makes. No tear down and setup required.
