Background papers come in different widths too, or you can get a longer one and cut it to size with a saw.
The background support is just a cross-bar that sits on top of regular lighting stands. If you're going for less than the full 9ft standard width, make sure the cross-bar is adjustable for length. Telescoping ones are good, not expensive.
Thanks Richard. As I am shooting in a house rather than a lovely big studio I was planning on getting one of the intermediate width rolls. It will be big enough to manage all of the statues etc.
