Hi, I have a massive White popup backdrop with a big White train. I know if I want to make that backdrop appear grey I can move my subject away from it, reduce aperture size and stop the flash from hitting the backdrop. However how do I get the train to appear the same colour as the backdrop? I guess the train is likely to get light on it if I light up the subjects legs and feet.

It's got nothing to do with how far the subject is from the backrgound, but how far away the light is from it.

Which is why what you're trying to do won't work :(

It is possible, and it can and does work, but it's about balancing the light on the backdrop and floor, whilst exposing the subject seperately. Think flags, grids, gobos, fingers, foamboards...and you're getting there.

Have fun :) lol

How do you expose the subject correctly and at the same time under-expose the floor to make it grey, when the subject is standing on it?

Needs a grey background.

Exactly as I said, keep the light OFF the backdrop and floor in the first place.....

Perfect exposure head to toe on the subject will be difficult, but if you can cope with fall off on the subject towards the floor it's achievable.

Even a white backdrop can be dropped to black if you control the spill onto the background, anything from black to white and everything in between is achievable.

I know you're familiar with the hilite, which has the issue with the vinyl floor not blowing out and stay a murky grey...just turn down the lights in the hilite to match, and what have you got? A grey background, and a grey floor....no ideal. But impossible? Nope

Thanks guys - and hoppy yup i get it now, it's about keeping the lights away from the backdrop which i guess means you got to keep the subject away from teh backdrop too if the subject is being lit from the front.

I need to find a way of making flags on the cheap and holding them where i need them..
