weekly Greengo's 52 in 2014 - BALANCE now added

I know its only been 48 hours since the subject was released. It was a hard subject. Was thinking on capturing a chimney with smoke but the weather has been so bad I havent had the chance to go outside and wouldnt risk my gear in the wet anyway.
Cant for the life of me capture incense smoke with the correct lighting and was pulling my hair out. So I asked my lovely wifes mum if I could capture one of her cigarette's as it was happily sitting in a nice ash tray with smoke billowing out from it.
Again the lighting wasn't pefect so I tried to under exp in PP to just get the cigarette which could be deemed "A Smoke" where I live lol...
I then tried to capture smoke that she breathed out along with the cig. And the final effort was selective colour...
These are my efforts and I'm not overly joyed with them and expect crit :S
I havent given up on getting a better shot elsewhere though ;)

Fits the theme nicely and different to the incense stick images we have seen. The first image i cant seem to see any smoke coming from the cig, I like the pp work you have done in the second image and the last image i am not liking the sc work on the image.

Well on theme, 2nd's very smokey (y), first might have drawn more interest if it had been left to burn, leaving just the ash in the shape of the cigarette :)

It¡s really not easy this week - I'd go for #1 although there doesn't appear to be any actual smoke it's implied :)

#2 for me, the only one with any real smoke - although I do like the processing on #3, shame there's no smoke there though.

I think you've done well here.
I like the 3rd the best. Clear and crisp, though the smoke in 2nd works well for creating a very moody type shot.

Thanks for all your comments guys... It really surprised me that so many of you have positive things to say as I thought they were all crap...
Took the camera with me today and done some "smokey" water shots and on my way home noticed a fire... swung the car round and very quickly grabbed a boring pic of the smoke...

Heres the boring smoke billowing from a fire...

Like the photo of the stream, adding to a smoke theme might be pushing it a bit though..lol

yeah - nice work on the stream one... was the leaf placed by yourself, or nature? Either way it works well, bringing a nice bit of colour to the scene. Good glistening rocks too.

I'd go easy on the vignette too, maybe a bit larger, but a fair bit softer.

The stream shot is very effective with just the one leaf.

Hi second one for me too the leaf makes the picture really stand out

Placed by myself. I just thought it would stand out and using the rule of thirds I placed it where I thought an intersection would be. And thanks to the glistening rocks I went home with one very wet foot lol...
Thanks for the crit on the vignette... Will bear it in mind for future pics...

Cheers guys for all your comments...

Smoke #2 for me. Well composed and well timed photograph. The yellow leaf really adds...without it, it would be, IMO, a very average photograph.

Few slightly blown highlights.

I might be tempted to give it a bit of pop by upping the exposure, shadows, contrast and colours a tad.

Cheers.

Hi Colin :)

Smoke - You really are stretching my 'Tick' capacity this week lol :D

I was struggling to pick a fav from the first 3, but with you posting that stream image, well, by MILES for me it's the clear winner, what a great idea, and that single leaf

Like the smokey water pic. Minor crit: the leaf looks fake and is too bright for that scene.

HI Colin

love the smokey water shot , the leaf really lifts it (y) possibly agree with Andy re a small boost in exposre , contrast etc to bring the color out of the rocks a smidge more ?

Nice shot but I'm finding the bits of grass in front of the stone a bit off putting although it does line up with the dent in the rock :)

Hi, it all seems a little tight the stones are too central and need some more space, to maybe show a little more of the landscape
