Great shots on Pistonheads

GFWilliams is a member here.

And he's a mere whippersnapper - not long passed his driving test!

Well I hope he doesn't mind! I did wonder if he was. Looking at his website he's got a nice portfolio for a mere whippersnapper!

How do you get to shoot so many cars!? And especially at that age? I'm 17 and I struggle to get any clients, let alone shoot Paganis etc..

I'm good at networking and know a lot of people who own nice cars. They tell friends about me and I keep moving forward. For instance, the owner of these cars has put me in touch with two mates. One has a collection of ferraris and the other has a McLaren F1 and a few other cars.

Age doesn't matter at all. I used to think it did, but if people don't know they can't hold it against you. I have had a few surprised clients and having done business with one client on and off for a couple of months he was a little surprised to find out that I'm 18. He thought I was about 22

great stuff and well done for getting out there and making the contacts

The quality of your shots speak for themselves but your ability to network is I am sure paying massive dividends. As you've discovered people that own these cars happen to know lots of other people that own them, for someone of your age to be able to network well is rare indeed.

A mate of mine turned his photography from a hobby to a career by being a great networked. I think he'd admit he's still learning his craft but he's being able to earn a living because he happens to know a lot of people in his chosen field.

The problem I'm facing at the moment is that I don't have enough time in the day.

I'm a university student studying computer Science at Nottingham and also doing the photography on the side, but with editing, organising things with photography and actually shooting I'm really struggling to find time to do both. I feel I need to cut down, but then I see the potential to be earning more and just go ahead and book up more stuff! This month is a new record month for how much I'll be earning so I'm quite excited, but I'm also very very very stressed and am not getting enough sleep as I'm working late on my uni work. :bonk:

That's a very hard balance to strike, you're in an unusual situation. The worst thing that can happen is that you don't do either properly and don't do yourself justice. The sensible advice and the one that I think most people will give you is to make sure you give your studies the attention they need and cut back on the photography whilst still trying to build your business. That gives you the most options and least risk.

Whilst that is the easy answer I am not sure it's the right one...you obviously need to ask yourself what you want your chosen career to be and what the best way to achieve that is. I am sure you are talking to your parents about it but I'd also talk to some of your clients about it...they're obviously successful people and will probably have some good advice.

I've thought about it long and hard and have made a decision to just continue with the course and do as much photography as physically possible. I'm lucky that I can choose to do the amount of work that suits me, but when I'm given the option of doing a shoot of something or not I'll almost always do it as I enjoy photography so much! I even enjoyed my shoot on Saturday in gale winds and the pouring rain :cuckoo:

NICE, good on ya mate for working so hard on your pics and uni. Its good to see your not the stereotypical student lol. You seem to have more get up and go then most people twice your age and im sure you will become a big success if you continue at this rate.

Those pics on PH are great, but you can tell someone has a lot of money when they have a plasma screen in the garage lol. Obviously the cars give the wealth away also.

love no.2 but don't like no.4, pole intersecting the car

likes the trees but would probably clone out poles/wires/pylons imo :)

George, wait til you do your dissertation, you will be even more stressed and you won't hav time for photoshoots. I can wait to finish mine now.

Brilliant! Might be able to find some TVR owners in Essex that would be interested if you are still looking to increase your portfolio? Not quite in the same class as the Mclaren and Ferraris I know! PM me if you are interested :)
