When approx will their young hatch and take to the water, mid june, july etc?

Some have done it already. Depends in when they laid but I suspect any time now you'll start to see more.

If they have a failed nest they can go on trying for quite a while sometimes. I've seen new chicks in august.
I really wish there were more of them around and places to see them up close in cornwall & devon. They're one of my favourite birds.

Try Stover Country Park. Nest in front of the hide but now very slightly obscured by vegetation. Adult feeding as per the images below.

Thank you, guess will have to pop out and keep my eye on them

Its always the best way. Posibly out tonight to see if my local Little Grebes are out yet with there young:)

Nearer still for you Bob is Lower Tamer Lakes, I saw at least two pair there in the week and one was quite near.

(@JPL - lovely clear shots, were you laying down to take those?)

I do like these birds as well. Since getting into photography over the past few years, it has got me back into birdwatching (was in the YoC when I was younger if anyone can remember that? Sorry, I digress :) ).

I know it is a bit far from you, but I went to Dearne Valley in Yorkshire and there were a few there. Managed to track one diving and surfacing and guessed where it would come up. This was just as it surfaced. Will have to go and check if/when there are some chicks about now.

There used to be a few nesting in a lake near me, haven't seen them for a few years now :(

Anyway, as i remember the young hatched quite early on in the year, maybe spring/early summer? Don't quote me on that though.

we have a pair on a lake were i work, they have 2 young and been about for 4-6 weeks now, its great watching them as the young climb onto the mothers back as she swims about while the male goes fishing

Been down in London for a few days with work and surprised how many there are around Canary Wharf at the moment! Just never had my camera with me :-(

Thanks for the replies, apologies for not responding

Well since posting this I have not been back lots of things have got in my way.

I plan to be going to the spot where I have found a pair nesting this weekend so fingers crossed

John if I get something any where close to your shots I will happy

Roy I have location of nesting pair very very local if you want the info send a pm
They are so close if I do not manage something decent then I best give up

Warnham LNR near Horsham has a pair that have bred very close to one of the hides. The chicks have left the nest and are getting piggy-backed about.

Gestation period 25 to 35 days depends on weather, how long it takes to lay a clutch etc. 2cd brood possible, chicks able to swim almost from the off.

Well four hours and it stayed in the middle of the lake this morning :(

Whats more of a concern the fisherman have only seen one for the last couple of weeks and the nest is no more
