Great Animal Images

Looks over worked to my eye. The areas of focus don't look right. The grass front left is sharp, so is the grass back right of the Lion but it's body in between those areas isn't.
It doesnt work for me.

I agree with Brian, something just isn't right with that lion shot.

I disagree those shots are amazing

But the osterich one, what are the chances it was abandoned there with that great backdrop and texture. I say it's been moved to get the shot, but I am pessimistic!

How any photographer can justify charging E12,000 for the printing of a digital image, though, is beyond me. No one is that good.

Brandt really does produce some stunning work. He's still shooting on film as well with a Pentax 67. He is known for spending days waiting for the right light.

Looks like a tilt-shift shot to me with the plane of focus running into the shot. Brave approach but works to my eye. The other thing is that, in an interview, Brandt said he waited 18 days for that shot for the lion and the wind to be right. It's a very different approach to wildlife - where he can go 6 weeks without making an exposure but it gives his images something extra.

You're probably right although wide angle shots can be deceiving. Lots of these sort of images have stuff moved around to make the composition - if he did move it, then all credit to him as he did it right.

He shoots film as said, then scans it.

He does a lot of stuff in-camera, and he's actually active on a few online forums if you look around. I remember hearing he uncouples the lens for the focus shifts, but can't remember if he debunked that or not. I know he gets a lot of fails for the few that work.

12 grand for a limited edition print; it's just what people are willing to pay. People sell photos for a heck of a lot more than that.

Funny how if something isn't shot 'straight' on 35mm digi, then it's 'not right'. :)

The PR machine worked well as I ended up buying his first book, and the 2nd looks like it's out of stock eveywhere.

Personally I love the pictures.

Some stunning images there, but a few that looked distinctly iffy?

Elephant Mother & Baby Holding Leg for instance? What's that all about? The only bit in focus is part of the mother's trunk...

Doesn't do it for me!

Still, most of it is outstanding...I can only dream about taking images like that!

Look again. :)

Nope. Still OOF....I think we're looking at different images!

They can tilt and shift it all they like...it still didn't do anything for me!

I'll go back and have another look.
