First thing I dont have a mouse...so I use the finger-thingie on the Laptop.... hence why I thought a graphics tablet would be better....and you can pick them up relatively cheap [although doesnt mean they're any good]

I managed perfectly well without TP or the Net whilst I was on holiday!

Well...seen as I just get riddiculed for posting...I'll go back to Photoshop....:shake::'(:embarrassed::(

I'd buy a cordless USB mouse, it will make using your laptop a lot easier anyways. You could probably get a decent one for £20.

Hi Adele

I only use a mouse, cordless too, but one of my mates who's absolutely the dog's-doodars with PS swears by tablets

He suggested to me that any tablet would prove much better/more useful than any mouse, and seeing him in action I'd have to agree - but haven't gotten around to it as yet - Focus next year I probably will though

So for now, get a good mouse would be my suggestion and come along to Focus to have a play before spending the dosh for a decent one - but certainly stop using the pad, they are horrid :gag::gag::gag:

I have been using one for about a year now, use it all the time don't bother with the mouse much at all now, I personally find using the tablet and keyboard short cuts, make photoshop a whole lot smoother to use.

Welcome back.
How was your trip. You get plenty of pics?
Get some posted if so.:)
About your question I have no idea, I use a mouse.
Would be interesting to get more comments.

Don't stop posting, Adele, we missed you while you were away;)

As others have said, touchpads are horribly inaccurate if you're trying to do something evenly vaguely detailed. I personally don't like wireless mice, as I find them too heavy and sometimes inaccurate too, as well as batteries dying on you at inopportune moments. The most robust and comfortable murine device I've used is the Microsoft Wheel Mouse. Simple and effective, and less than a tenner.

I dont reallly have the desk-space for a mouse...hahahaha...that is seriously true. 2-bed terraced, and I sleep in box room [still with parents] space is limited. My idea was...I can rest a graphics tablet better on either my knee/pillow/book, or on top of laptop....really space is a BIG issue...

I've been using a tablet since last Christmas and find it a joy to work with when editing images

Any recommendations on what is a good cheap Graphics Tablet to buy and what to avoid?.

+1 for the graphics tablet, once you get used to it you'll wonder how you got on with the mouse :)

Hi Adele,

If its the cheap "Trust" one you have seen, save your dosh and buy a "Wacom". They may be a few quid dearer, but worth the xtra.

Jim

I've been using a cheap Trust graphics tablet from Tesco (which served me well) and recently upgraded it to a A5 Wacom tablet.
I use it for photo editing and basically for everything else on my pc. My mouse has been put to one side :'(

You can customise the buttons on the pen and the A5 size may appear small but is big enough to edit on. Its so much easier to edit photographs espesually when touching up and using cropping and lasso tools.

I know pcworld do some. Have a look I would really recommend one

One of the ones I've seen is a "Wacom" one, £70 at PC World....they did have a "Wacom" one at £30...but sold out...[only a little one] but there are 4 "wacom" ones on PC World Website starting at £35 atm :)

Around that money you will get one with an A6 pad, it may not sound big, but they cover all your screen. I bought the "Volito 2" which was not too expensive, but that only works on my laptop (Windows) however when I got the "iMac" I then bought the "Bamboo" which works with both. I only use it for editing pics, but they say if you can get the hang if them, they are much quicker than a mouse or pad.

P.S. The Volito is redundant now.

Jim

I'd say that the graphics tablet is invaluable for doing anything with a brush or stamp or clone tool or anything like that, and definitely also helps when drawing freehand selections. I then use the other hand and my mouse to do things like manipulating layers and adjustment layers, and moving things around the image.

See this post to see my setup ...

I looked at the Volito 2 and the bamboo.....which would you say you preferred...I am using a laptop :D

I’ve used one for 3 or 4years now and wouldn’t be without it, I use both its mouse and pen the pen is the most useful as you get all the functions of the mouse plus you have pressure control over the brush you are using, that is to say the harder you press on the pen the broader and more intense the effect will be, turn the pen upside down and it becomes an eraser as with a real pencil this is also pressure sensitive, the buttons are programmable for left click right click etc, the one I use is a Wacom in conjunction with Photoshop, get one you wont regret it.

 Its just a case of which ONE to get now...lol

I used a basic (i.e. cheap) graphics tablet for a number of years but last year I bought a Tablet PC which is basically a laptop with a Wacom Graphics Tablet under the screen, so you put the tip of the pen exactly where you want it. Personally I couldn't imagine editing a photo using a mouse again.

I don't know how good or bad the different makes are but as long as you get one that has some degree of pressure sensitivity and some way of right clicking it should be OK. (all the tablets I've used assume you are left clicking when you have the pen on the surface)

I guess any of the Wacoms are good, just plug in and you are away, the bamboo has a couple more gadgets on it, but I can plug into either the Mac or Windows with it, the Volito is PC (Windows) only.

Guess it's down to the cash you want to spend.

Jim

I use an A5 wiacom and find it very useful for postprocessing. Takes a little getting used to but keyboard shortcuts and the pen buttons make it easier than you think :)

I couldn't cope without my graphics tablet, using a mouse is like drawing with a bar of soap!
I highly recommend them to anyone & it is one of the best investments that I have made.

I'll be interested to hear how you get on with it. I have had a look at the Bamboo recently and would like to hear peoples opinions on it.

I had a cheap tablet for a while which died and I haven't used one in years. Would love an A3 one but would probably need to remortgage thee house first! :bang:

I looked at the Bamboo, and decided on this one. Mainly 'cos I only use laptop. Dont have a mac...and dont intend on getting one in the near future....
I'll let you know how i get on!

Had chance to try the Wacom yet, if so, hows yer doin with it?

Can any one briefly explain to me :shrug:what a graphic tablet does and the advantages for photo editing. Ta!

A device that allows the user to draw on a tablet using a pen or stylus which is then digitised and translated into the graphics application of the user. A more naturally intuitive pointing device than a mouse. Can be used to simulate illustration and airbrush techniques.

I also use mine for music , :) , but will be upgrading soon as mine is OLDER than a ZX81

I have had the wacom bamboo for about 6 months now and love it. I never use the mouse now these days and don't like it when I have to go back to using one. The tablet also helps a lot with my rsi.

The bamboo is an excellent tablet although I have found myself not using the little buttons at the top as much as I thought I might. The widescreen sizing is very handy though.
