Have had a search but couldn't find anything recent. Can anyone suggest a graphics tablet to use with gimp 2.6.x? Ideally around the 50quid mark and as feature rich as possible (variable sensitivity, programable quick keys if poss).

Wacom bamboo...

Windows or Linux?
I use an older Wacom CTE-440 with Linux Ubuntu 10.xx. Everything works but it needed a custom script and I've not bothered to sort all the buttons out (I don't use them).
I'm pretty sure it works OK with Windows XP, too. I rarely boot into WinXP but recall it being fine the one time I tried it. Plus, of course, the software with Win has a graphical set-up utility.
Had it a year now, £45 (used) from ebay. Two buttons + scroll wheel on the tablet. Pressure sensitive, two button double-end pen.

Thanks, which versions of the bamboo and gimp are you guys using? Did you have any problems getting it to work?

Cheers

Again, I can only really speak as an Ubuntu user. No, it wasn't easy and I had to enlist the help of a clever-clogs ( :) ) from the Ubuntu forum to get my script working then add some additional lines and calculations from another Ubuntu thread to constrict it to the right-hand monitor geometry only.
My RH monitor is calibrated, I do all my editing with GIMP on it.

My WinXP experience was altogether easier but didn't give me the constriction to the RH monitor I wanted. I've no doubt it's possible but as I rarely use XP, I didn't look into it further.

There may be a need to look at the
Edit>Preferences>Input Devices
but I didn't have to.

I'm on XP - looking at some of the CTL-460's on the bay. Looks like they should do the job.

I suppose ultimately, what you want to use it for?
Low-end, like this model and mine, it'll be great for re-touching, which is all I use mine for.
For artwork/drawing, maybe not so hot as new models.
My cloning, dodging/burning, selecting, spotting-out (scans from prints/negs) has come on leaps and bounds with pressure sensitivity and pen-like control. And that's pretty much all I want and use. YMMV... I'd never be without it now.

GIMP can be a powerful tool but as you probably have realised, it's a sodding PITA to get to grips with. I always suggest getting the g'mic and FX-Foundry packs.

I've used gimp for a few years now so happy with the functionality and know how to get the results I need, but would like to use the pen functionality for fine control and ease of use. I'm no artist but it would be a good tool for my 6yo to start using as he is art mad so just basic functionality would be great on that front. Ideally I'd like something slight;y larger than the smallest sozed bamboo but can't find a medium version other than the "fun" version which seems a lot more expensive and includes Elements. Not sure if it has buttons on it either.

Ah right. Probably different for an ankle-biter :)
Mines 125x90mm, roughly, and after a short while, your eyes are on the screen, not the tablet.
My nephew is coming up 13, though closer to 7 (learning) and gets on with it ok but I do think a larger one might have been be better. That said, he manages fine, now. Some frustration at first, though.

thanks Mike
Think I'm set on going for either the bamboo pen and touch (latest but one edition) or see if I can get a bargain on the bamboo fun medium pen and touch which would be ideal.

thanks muchly
