I am thinking of building a new tower for editing, how much of a difference does the graphics card make to speed? I was looking at a Nvidia 1070 .

There are good reasons to get even a half decent graphics card but PS and LR aren't one.

Some people will say Adobe are planning to improve GPU acceleration and it's good to be prepared but to be honest they've been saying that for years and I wouldn't hold my breath. Get a graphics card if you need one, not because it might be a good idea in the future (by which time you'll be able to get a better, cheaper one).

My system has a low spec Radion R9 270 in it and nothing Photoshop or Lightroom can do give it any issues, a 1070 is way over the top for photo based work, but as you really want to buy it for gaming it should be fine.
Only game I play is solitaire :)

GPU Acceleration is only used in the Develop Module in Lightroom. I use a Nvidia GTX980TI but I don't think it is needed for photo editing but it is good for Video editing.

Mine uses the onboard graphics and its fine for both PS and LR , when it was built ( by CCL Computers) I explained what it would be used for and was told as I was not doing video editing it would be fine

The GTX 1070 is disproportionately expensive at the moment as it's popular with crypto-currency miners. Something like a GTX 1050 Ti should be more than enough plus it'll cost you less than half the price of a GTX 1070 and use only a third of the power.

In a box somewhere in the loft I have an old GTX295 that cost me £500 new and is now worth £20 on eBay. I no longer use it because (a) the R9 does everything I need and (b) the power supply in my new PC is not powerful enough to run it.

Don't buy top end cards until they are at least a year old and 2 or 3 revisions down, you can save fortune that way and still get almost identical performance outside of benchmarking software.

Would it speed up ProShow when doing A.V. work?
