Hi All,

Well the Granite City Rally is on next month and it will be the first time that i will have tried to take photos of motorsport, has anyone got any tips, what kind of shutter speed should i use, should i start with a fast speed and then gradually start slowing it down?? would it be useful to have a monopod??

thanks in advance.

hmm, no opinions???

do you think i should maybe take some burst shots whist panning, ?

im sure a few of you have been to a rally before, what kind of settings do you prefer to use?

Here's a couple of examples to give you an idea where to start. ideal shutter speeds depend on the light available during the day;)

This one's from one of the Fintray hillclimbs last year - 1/100" at f/10 - nice blurry background.

And this is from last years Granite City - 1/640", f/5.6, fast enough to freeze-frame the Escort.

hey reddeathdrinker, cheers for that, hopefully the weather will be like last year, it was perfect, dry and sunny. (makes a change) think i will just have to try a few settings until i get something i like, thanks anyway i was just looking for a couple setting and examples, cheers..

Hi Chris, you should just try as much as you want and learn from it. I would try to keep the shutter speed about 1/200th - 1/250th to start with this will keep the car sharp and the wheels blurry to show a bit of motion. Then as reddeathdrinker said above somthing like 1/100th - 1/60th and pan with the car will keep the car sharp and the background blurry because of the movement. The one I like best is zoom burst. You pan with the car at a really slow shutter speed 1/5th - 1 sec and when you click the button you rotate your zoom in or out this creates a really nice effect, but their are many different ways to use it. Just don't be scared to try things its the only way you'll learn!! :)

This is a zoom burst shot from the rally last year

Edit P.S - Find some nice clean backgrounds, this will improve your shots loads!!!
