weekly Gramps' Photo52 2012 - Week 30 'Contrast' added

I like the mono in this, good choice. I think it would be better than colour in my opinion.

I like your authority shot a lot Gramps; very nice!

Leave is also good, but I'd have liked the sign to be a bit more isolated, either with a shallow DoF or with colour.

Okay today I present RANDOM stones ... these are part of the Stone Circle in Stanton Drew. A very hot sunny afternoon so the colours are well saturated, I don't know the history of how the stones got there but this group is just a small selection of the many stones in the field.

Nice one Gramps :) I might have been tempted to use a shallower DoF, but I think we disagree on that point because I tend to have too shallow a DoF if anything, while you often seem to have quite a deep one. I think we should break up the band due to "artistic differences"!!!

It is a great shot though, and certainly very random :)

Random - nice find Gramps. Very vivid colours, nice focus too

Cheers Nick

I do have some with a shallower DOF Mark but in this instance I just wanted the background to show through clearly as I felt it added to the picturesque setting of the stones.

Yep, can't argue with that, and it's achieved what you wanted :)

Hi Gramps,

like ya pic, think the focus is just fine, fits the theme well:)

nice pic gramps whats that blue thing in the top of the pic?

Hi, Gramps, Random I feel is one of your strongest for a while. I like the deep DOF, nice, vivid colours.

I bet it would be better at sunrise/set with nice warm tones.

Cheers.

 it does seem a long time doesn't it.

Very nice landscape scene that Gramps, nice composition and lovely colours.

Appreciated, it was a lovely day for it.

You know I really think I'll need to do that before we lose the sun again.

very nice shot, lovely colours, random stones, lovely :)

Nice clean image. The scale has thrown me though. They look reasonably small and then I find out Stanton drew is the UK's second largest stone circle!

They are a relatively small group amidst the many larger stones ... from a previous visit ...

Authority - nice find and nice take on the theme. Good building, great skies. Like it better without the road but I think I would have preferred a wider crop on the sides.

Leave - lovely mono shot, nice composition. Like your thinking for the take on the theme!

Random - another stunning sky. Good summery landscape shot. Like the theme interpretation and like Andy says, it would make a good sunset/sunrise shot.

For this week's theme of 'temperature' I have chosen a small series of 3 photos taken at the Bath & West Show.
The setting was under cover and with a high volume of farriers and judges in the area as this was obviously a competition - light was poor and of course there were dozens of spectators all willing to get in the way of a good photo :)

So excuses made ... I present ... The Farrier.

mmmm eye candy, I mean, oops, erm, *blush* very good shots

Good work there Gramps
You've handled the light/exposures well. All three together tell the story, bang on theme IMHO. Iain

Hi Gramps, your best yet I recon! It has to be number 1 for me.

2 would be the one if it weren't for the guy in the background and the strange levitating bottle, while in 3 I can't see what hes doing clearly enough (it's there, just not what my eye is drawn to). A crop might help this one a lot I think.

Number 1: cracker, with perfect (and I mean perfect) DoF!!!

Temperature - Nice set. I really like No 3 and this pips it for me as the because of the rising steam. Strong composition too and back on theme.

Hi Gramps, sorry I have struggled to keep up these last few weeks!

Leave, this made me chuckle! On theme, nice rule of thirds and suits the mono

Random, definitely a random bunch of stones. I like the first one for the nice blue sky and rolling fields in the background!

Temperature, no apologies needed. I think you've done well in a difficult situation.

#1, I like the motion blur showing the farrier working fast before he loses the heat on the metal.

#2, I would probably have cropped the water bottle out in number two as it is a little distracting (that would also crop out most of the guy in the background) but then it's probably there to cool the farrier down as he works so actually fits the theme! I would still consider reducing the saturation on the blue bottle so it doesn't stand out quite so much:thinking:
#3, the steam coming off the shoe here really says temperature to me. It's just a shame the front half of the horse is white as the steam is a little lost against the horses coat.

These three would be a good candidate for a triptych maybe:thinking:

mmmm eye candy, I mean, oops, erm, *blush* very good shots
 But you can't see his face so who knows?!?!?!?!

Hi ya

Good set of images for Temperature & given the circumstances you've done darn well with all of them
#3 for me....the smoke from the hot shoe on the hoof is spot on , a darker horse would have nailed it but hey , not possible this time but love the image...

Hi Gramps,

Random - I love this. Great colours and detail.

Temperature - My pick out of the lot would be #3 because of the smoke and the lack of clutter (#2 has the bottle and the other man in the background). If it were me, I'd have cropped out the tail of the horse, as most of the detail seem to have been lost. I think as far as composition goes, #1 is better, and it says "temperature" more than #3, but for me focus is in the wrong place (that's just me, though).

On theme with these images. All three show the action well.

Hi Gramps

The third one is the best of the set for me, all real good shots, but I really the composition of this one, the smoke coming off the hoof looks great, a moment well caught !!!

Thanks all, all points noted and appreciated ... now abstract

"Abstraction indicates a departure from reality in depiction of imagery" - so here is my 'departure from reality' ... a prize-winning lily. The original photo was taken on Thursday so prior to the theme change day but the processing to abstract form was done today so hope that counts!

wow it really jumps out at you :) love the glass effect

Random #1 is good. I like the angle and composition...light looks very hard, though.

Temperature #3 for me, bit closer to the hoof, maybe?

Abstract, again, on theme and very unusual processing...it has a real Man Ray feel to it....

Cheers.

Wow, I'd never have known that was an iris!

I love it. It's a great example of how even overused presets or pp filters can be used to good effect if you just think about the final image.

Stunning :)

I would never have guessed that it was a lily either, the effect is far from subtle and it looks like effect that you would find being used in an 80's Dr Who episode (well that is what springs to mind).

Abstract - definitely works as a theme for this week. Good interpretation, I quite like the PP
