hellooo i'm new here and i recently inherited a d70 from my dad. took a few photos while on holiday in malta and most of them came out exceedingly grainy. here's an example, shot by a friend on auto mode:

surely if i were using manual, i would accredit it to something i'm doing wrong, but auto! furthermore, it was a perfectly sunny day and shot on a ship's deck so it can't be a lighting problem.. can it?

Its because you have your ISO too high. Basicly ISO is a term given to the speed of light hitting the sensor. So if your using a high ISO such as 1600 or higher you will get stuff called noise on your pictures. This looks like grain or can sometimes come out looking like a coloured grid (you can find out how this happens on wikipedia or something). What you need to do is change you ISO for different conditions. Lots of light, low iso. No light, high ISO. But obviously you want to be balancing your ISO shutter speeds and aperture for each condition :)

thanks for the help. i'll have to check my ISO settings on the camera. it's really weird you can't see the picture though. is there anyone else who can't see it? (i can!) here are a few more just to see if the bb code works:

can grain be attributed to anything else other than ISO?
 
ahhh my camera was somehow set to ISO 1600 (???) that solves it then. thank you so so so much for your help!
 
Glad you got it sorted, it looks like the sensor could do with a bit of a clean as well.

I ran half of one of your pics through through another noise reduction software solution- Neat Image (freely downloadable). On it's default settings the result is not too bad. You could fix these photos easily with software.

I always try to shoot at the lowest practical ISO setting and rarely venture above ISO 400.

Here's the quick go I had (diagonal before-n-after slice).

thanks for the advice! neatimage is only available for windows though and i'm on a mac. (correct me if i'm wrong) will give noiseninja a shot but am a struggling uni student so will have to think about purchasing it. thank you all very very much!
 
noiseninja is available for mac os x - you still gotta pay though, the results look worth it, there is a student discount too
