I am photographer for a magazine we are publishing at college, and I've been asked to take pictures of graffiti or similar street art for one of the features.

I live in Southend, Essex, but can easily travel up to London and use the tubes. Please bear my location in mind though as I probably wouldn't want to travel right up to the other end of London.

I'm basically looking for big, colourful (not essential), interesting pieces of graffiti or street art. Even if it's big letters printed on a wall with something that makes you think (Like I saw in some of petemc's Liverpool pictures I think?), that'll be fine.

Thanks!

I have been looking for these types of locations myself for an edgey urban fashion shoot. Although as yet i havent been to view the locations i have been advised that Camden is good (although not sure what its going to be like at the moment) and the skate spots around Londons South Bank (near the National Theatre).

There's more graffiti (and not just mindless scrawls) than you can shake a stick at on the South Bank in London near festival hall. If you walk East along the Thames from The Eye you can't miss it, it's about a 5 minute walk. There's usually a load of skateboarders and BMXers (if that is the correct term?) around the place too. It's quite dark under there thoughso you may want some extra lighting.

Yeah I just looked at Phil T's thread with pictures of BMXers at South Bank and the graffiti looks perfect, so thanks for that. I may also check out Camden, I've been there several times but have never really noticed any, but that's probably because I wasn't looking for it.

Hi JayKay - you've beaten me to it! That spot would be perfect for almost any shoot involving graffiti, but you would need decent flash guns to light it up. There's masses of wall space & I often see it being used as a "pro" shoot backdrop. I even got some shots of a new TV serial called LVH being filmed there.
Handsome isn't he?!?!?

Loads of that sort of stuff around Hoxton/Shoreditch, where I'm working now.

Memorial Park, Wickford. Highcliffe Road End. Theres a row of garages facing the play area and its about 30foot of grafiti ill dig an old compact photo its quite close nothing like london but local.

Yep if you're heading to london then defo the south bank and also around shoreditch/brick lane/old st. Banksy has hit these places pretty hard if you like his work.

If you are struggling take a look on flickr and search for graffti london or graffti and the area you want and flickr mail some of the photographers or graffti artists I did this with some nottingham ones and got helpful replys off each one telling me where the best stuff was.

and dont forget if your going to london to have your Jabs!

Thanks for the helpful replies. I headed up to London yesterday quickly and visited South Bank. It was getting dark by the time I got there though, and I don't have an external flash, so the pictures didn't come out great. There was actually someone doing graffiti on the walls there, and he agreed to let me take pictures of him in action if I emailed them to him, so I've got a few like that.

Southbank, urban life, graffiti just all go hand in hand. I skate there quite a bit and there are always people using the place for photography. Such a intresting place. Shame it's getting knocked down soon :(
