Graffiti or Art?

Love the Monkey on the subway train. Man how did he get away with doing that!

I bet he works on the Londown Underground security team.

I love his works though.

definately art, Banksy is very talented, some of his indoors art is superb and carries a definate message, what would a photographer make of this? http://www.banksy.co.uk/indoors/media.html I love street art.

I hate smart alecky answers to questions like this so I hope this doesn't sound too much like one.

Grafitti is a way of saying "look at me" of advertising the 'sprayer', sometimes there can be some skill in it but most often it's just a mess.
Art is a way of expressing yourself, saying look at what I see, the way I see it.

From the examples above, Banksy has a lot of skill and a real sense of humour, it's art :)

Both are freakily good. I was ignorant of Banksy's work before, but now feel very educated.

Art for Art's sake ... lovin' it actually ... :D

Love the cutting about the guys convicted of painting over his 'graffiti' ... ... bit of a turn up ... even if they were coppers snogging ...

:p

I see loads of togs making a good living out of Banksy's art, there’s a couple of stalls and shops just around Spittlefeilds selling images...Not for me really, although I can see the attraction obviously, I'd rather take the shot of the real thing, but caught as Banksy has painted it....

...now that is difficult. ...but its the rules though, isn't it. ;)

...must be a copyright thing going on as well, perhaps he doesn't care, done him good after all.

Art for me. Cracking stuff.

Not heard or seen any of this stuff before - but now I have, I think it's great.

As for doing your art and showing it off - it's what we do here with our gallery posts, etc. Hopefully most people will see it as art. If it was some posh geezer with a lottery grant standing in the nude, it would be classed as 'revolutionary and contemporary'. As it's some bloke ( i think), with a spray can, it's questioned as graffitti. No doubt he has an ASBO by now

Good luck to Banksy I say!! Keep it up.

Normally I hate graffiti. I have been lucky to travel to a lot of nice places and to see illedgable scrawl indiscrimently dawbed on walls and statues in places like Venice, Bern, Stockholm and of course London is to me an eyesore and definatley not art. But this is at least pleasing to the eye and contains a message that has a meaning and not just a 'Tag'. I vote for art.

Defo art, as prev stated art makes you think and there is some graffitti out there that may transcend into both areas but most graf stuff is some wannabe artist with little imagination just low self esteem....IMO
Man I am on an opinionated roll this morn :)

loving it

The kind of stuff Banksy does is definately art, however "xxx wos 'ere", scrawled on a wall is graffiti, IMHO. There was a report in one of the newspapers recently about some of his work on the underground being painted over and also councils "destroying" it by painting it out. They said although they appreciated his talent, rules were rules and he was breaking them.... (or something to that effect). Shame really, the good stuff usually brings smiles to peoples faces and that's not easy to do in this day and age.

It is Graffiti which IS a form of ART. No arguments there. I have his book and love his stuff.

Graffiti is street art. So for some of you that could just include tagging on a wall or scrawling crap (two differing things, tho not to the uninitiated) and it can also be larger pieces, chromes, burners, illustrations.

the pic of the little girl with a diving helmet (on canvas) expected to fetch around £180k
