Can anyone point me in the direction or appropriate search/technique to clone out the black patch (wall picture) in the top right of this portarit?

with it being a gradual fall off of light I am struggling (Im using PSE7)

Im sure ive seen it done before using a layer and a gradient and remember something about white to black but have had a try and cant work it out

I thought about using a copy from this image (taken within minutes in same location) but think its a tad darker

Any help will be gratefully recieved folks :)

I would clone it onto a seperate layer - and then use the opacity of the layer to blend it in.

No cloning in mine....

New layer
Gradient tool (radial gradient selected)
foreground colour and background colour sampled from top right area
draw gradient from forehad ish to top right corner

gives this on new layer (banding due to compression (will be less if you work in 16 bit TIFF))

Then layer mask and paint out the black bit.

I'm sure the easier way would be to have removed the picture before taking the shot..... ;)

thanks guys,

your previous edit looks great rhodese....however (in case it wasnt obvious in the top post) I am a PP novice and so youve lost me with it.

your effort looks decent too brian. Im not sure on your technique though. Did you cut out the black square, have the alternate image as a background to blend in?

I understand yours Graham (yay!) however it draws my eye too much. I dont know if this is because you were kind enough to show the gradient you used.

Funnily enough i did remove the picture afterwards, I just didnt like his face as much in those ones. Typical eh?

I think Grahams way is actually simpler to explain, I used the other image instead of making a new grad: Hopefully this image says it all! (looks better uncompressed)

Bye the way Derek, I got carried away with the retouching and forgot to say what brilliant pictures.

Thanks Brian,
They look brilliant on my (uncallibrated) laptop but look really dull on my iphone, so i wasnt sure how the colours had came out.

Ive had a go.. I cant get it to look anywhere near as good as you guys, its looking incredibly obvious and clumsy but its a start.

Thanks for your input everyone.
