Just looking at a cheap GPS unit and came across the IGOTU data logger for
40 quid.....seems to have good reviews.
I see from a search that Arad was pleased with his but this post was over 14 months ago.
Anyone else using one of these or could recommend something similar.
I use CS6 and Lightroom 4 with a D700 and Windows 7
Any help appreciated....it does say it comes with its own software presume this is compatible with the above but does anyone use anything any different.

Still happy with mine.

My workflow is GPS s/w -> .gpx file via export -> Jeffery Friedls GPS plugin for LR software. I've not tried direct into the map s/w.

The hard part is remembering to take it with me and turn it on!!
 
Thanks for your update, Andy, I did wonder whether you are still using it.
Which one did you get the 120 or 600 (I think they are)
How does the gpx file work with the Friedl software and then Lightroom please..I'm not upto date with how this works at the moment!!!
I'm also hoping to upgrade to Lightroom 5 and wonder how they will be compatible.

Yeah. Used it in Japan a couple of months ago and it was fine :) (which perhaps isn't too surprising for a GLOBAL positioning system!). Got the 120 - all I wanted was to record some waypoints. Seriously - the hardest thing to do is remember to switch it on!!

The I-got-u software has a proprietary storage format describing the way points. You can export the file to a .gpx file which is one of the industry standard waypoint files. Most things will just read that. I had Jefferys software before the map module of 4, so I was used to that (and liked it) so renewed the license when I upgraded to LR4.

BTW: I've not tested the accuracy. I don't need to know to the mm where a photo was taken, just the general area. It has got the walks we've done reasonably accurately. Occasionally, it places me in the middle of the canal we walk by, but that's good enough for me ;)

Another question please......does with unit work with RAW files or do they have to be jpegs

It's light room that does the geotagging. The file format is anything lr reads
 
I have been looking at a few different makes. Will all of them be suitable for photography as some that I have seen specify activities like walking, hiking, climbing etc.
Also please, I know Lightroom Maps can add co-ordinates by dragging and dropping images onto Google Maps so what extra would a GPS unit provide would it be more precise on the location or would there be other advantages.

As long as the device can log positional information in a file then it should be OK for photography. If you buy such a device that says it's for hiking then just don't tell it that you're using it for photography - they're very gullible like that.

Dragging images to Google Maps is fine - as long as you can remember exactly where you took the image. Quite often, especially on holiday, I have no idea just where I was when I took a photo.

So it depends if you want to add location data to images shot in Paris or the Namib desert.
