I am due to go on a trip to Iceland in march, i have looked into software apps on my smartphone, but i am concerned about the app running the battery flat very quickly. phone battery life isnt great to start with.

Any suggestions for a decent GPS Data logger upto £100, so i can keep it in my pocket when out and about on trips and then geotag my photos when back home again.

I use my Garmin handheld GPS to record a track log when I'm out walking, and use it to tag the photos when I get home. Garmin's free mapping software has a photo tagging option, but I usually use the map feature on Aperture.
The most basic eTrex model will be more than adequate and you can get one for about £70-80. That leaves £20 for a couple of sets of rechargeable batteries and a charger.
 
I use the Nikon GP-1. I know it's expensive but everything is done in the camera, picks up satellites quickly and it just works.

I'd much rather use the manufacturers own equipment than faff with something which may or may not work faultlessly, especially for something like a foreign trip abroad.

I've tried the GP-1 and yeah, it works, but unless they updated it they did something really dumb with the power management. Either you have it on all the time (which kills the camera battery) or you have it power up with the meter. That's fine but often it's unable to get a fix before the meter goes off. So unless you shoot a lot in one place it seldom has an accurate position.

I use this one from Maplins - similar to the one @redhed17 linked to but the motion detector means the battery typically lasts weeks.

It works great but be aware that it has a built-in battery and recharges via a USB charger or computer.

I also have a Canon GP-E2 GPS receiver that sits on my EOS 5D III and that geotags images in-camera complete with direction and altitude data, it can also auto update the in-camera clock and this uses one standard "AA" battery

Update,

I have now bought an I-got-u GT-120 from Maplins for 40 quid, just need to test it when out and about.

Only downside so far is the software doesnt recognise the hardware properly in win 7 64bit, must be a driver issue.
As it works fine on my netbook running 32bit win 7 starter edition.
 
Cool. My GT-600 doesn't seem to be recognised by HoudahGeo under Mavericks. But the crazy homebrew app you can find on the web can talk to it.

The i-gotu works independently of the camera. As long as your camera's time clock is correct (and even to some extent if it isn't) it will work with it. AFAIK everything mentioned in this thread apart from the Nikon GP-1 works in the same way.

Google says the GP-1 will work with the D7100. There are also some Chinese copies of the GP-1 around.

Dumb Question about the IGotU - Can you still switch it on whilst charging?

I'm thinking of taking one on a safari and have access to a 14W solar charger - does it still work whilst being charged?
 
Slightly O/T but what is the point in recording where you have photographed images? Is it just for your own benefit when you import them into the likes of Lightroom so you can recall where this and that was taken?

I know my iPhone does it, so sometimes, nice to see where I took that etc.

I only have it connected to USB on my Laptop to charge, not record my movement. I've lots of building work atm and I don't know where my tracker is to check it. :(

It is not only to record where I took any pics, because I sometimes may want to go back to to take a pic of the same scene again, either to improve the first pic, or take the pic in different light, but I also like to see where I have been walking around a city. I got a Tesco Hudl tablet at Xmas and have an app than can also do the same thing, whilst also giving me a real-time location, but I have doubts that the battery will last the day with too much use. I'll hopefully find out at the end of the month if I can get away on holiday somewhere. :)

The IGotU tracker was also very good for recording the track of the plane last time, as I was sitting near a window, and had the tracker on my wrist, ;) not something I think the Hudl could do. :thinking:
