So, after a few 'hints' to Santa I've got a Fuji Finepix 'S' 14 megapix camera and not a clue how to work it! I've been through the options in the various modes and I'm picking it up gradually but if any kind soul will take pity can they please give me the Idiot's Guide to aperture, shutter speed and ISO?

I tried a few fast motion shots of a motocroser the other day and got lots of nice dark blurs, and a couple of indoor static shots which look awfully grainy, so I've resorted to AUTO settings, but I feel I could get more out of the camera than that....with a little advice!

For instance, roughly what settings can I dial to the 'Set Shutter Speed and Aperture' option to make moving shots look better?
 
Ah, what a question. If I were to say, it depends, would that be helpful? Sorry, but that really is the simple answer.

The best advice is I'm afraid go and buy a book on the basics of photography. It'll explain the relationship between shutter speed/Aperture and ISO, and what effect a change in each of those will have.

Then try it out. It's a slower way of learning and will provide more answers than a narrow (ish) question here.

However on the brighter side, its always good to learn by experiment and it leads to better all round knowledge of the subject, which will pay you in the end.

Start by trying to learn about the exposure controls (exposure is the term you want to be searching for). When you've learnt what they do to the amount of light being captured you'll be able to cure your dark photo problem and when you've learnt the "creative" aspect of the controls you'll be able to cure your blurriness problem (by controlling the shutter speed).

And read your camera's manual. People seem to thing it's uncool to read the manual but camera ones are quite good in my experience and you may find your camera does something really useful that you'd have never found out about otherwise.

I started by reading the articles here (I'd work on exposure first and then go back over to the bits about composition) and the manual from a Fuji Finepix S9600.

They're definitely live. They're hosted on Photobucket. Check you have access to that.. that Photobucket is actually working at the moment, or whether you have accidentally firewalled it.
 
Wow! Thanks for all that guys, I'm sure I'll get the hang of it all, eventually.
I've been taking a few sunset/sunrise shots as that's probably easiest to get a result which looks reasonable, and will see if I can post my 'best' one for criticism.
