"You can take our wedding photos!" No way can they afford a proffesional so my first question is what length lens do I use. We have a 40D anda 400D camera. Widest lens at present is the 18-55 kit lens.

You could use that for large group shots, have you got a nifty fifty? that's a good choice for it's sharpness and its low light capability.

18mm is plrenty wide enough but you're better off stand back a bit and shooting with a longer focal length to avoid problems with distortion. The nifty is likely to be your best lens on the day simply because you'll probably need the fast apertures.

Got 2 niftys. 1.8 & 1.4

A Nifty (especially that 1.4) the kit lens would do most of the work. That 70-200 for those artsy bokeh-riffic shots would be good too.

If that's your kit, stick the 1.4 on the 40D, that'll be your workhorse. Stick the 18-55 on the 400D, that'll be when you've absolutely got to have the extra room.

Between Liz & I we have 100-400L, 70-200L, canon 75-300 IS, Tamron55-200, Canon 100mm macro, two kit lenses and the two 50mm lenses. 2 tripods but only the onboard flashes. (Flashgun still on the list of things to get). Could hire a lens if needed.

You gotta have a flash and some kind of diffuser.

Is it even possible to rent a flash? I would imagine so since you can rent most everything else!

ive got my first photographic wedding favour to do tomorrow and i cant say im looking forward to it. i have a nikon d70s body as my main with a nifty 50 and a sigma 17-70 f2.8 with an sb600 along with a d40 + 18-55mm and a 55-200mm just incase#

oh and a tripod a brolly and a big bloody bag and no doubt neck ache by the end of the day :(

i hope yours goes well it should be an interesting expeirence

regards

rik

Don't forget the 100mm macro doubles as a handy portrait lens. I use mine to take pics of the rings in the best man's hand before the ceremony and to shoot details of the place settings.

If you can get a flash, take it, you'll need it, even with fast glass.

I have been asked to do two free family weddings now, both times I have refused. I don`t have the skill, kit nor interest to do it justice. So I just say no.

Well, from this kit, all that's missing is a flashgun.

Leave the 75-300 IS and 55-200 at home, the 70-200L will be the choice for longer focal length shots. As mentioned previously, the 50mm f1.4 will be the best option for the majority of your shots. 100-400 probably a bit too slow so you may want to leave that in the car. Your macro lens may be a good choice for candid portraits. The kit lens will be fine when you need a bit of width. I always bring my 10-20mm lens with me for weddings as there are times when you can't get it all in with your longer lenses. I shouldn't think you'd need to rent any lenses, you have enough there.

Don't forget to bring at least 10 gigabytes of memory, possibly more if there are 2 of you shooting.

I always say no to any wedding request as a matter of routine now. I was "told" by a mate a few months back that I could shoot his. I pointed him in the direction of a rather costly snapper and told him to take a look and that he was quite a bit cheaper than I'd be. :D

If your asked and would would like to shoot a wedding then great but lots of people seem to take the stance that they do it reluctantly. I'm guessing and hoping that's not the case here and the thread title is just a bit tongue in cheek.

It is the step son and there is no way he could afford a pro tog so as I am the only one in the family with anything other than a P&S it will be up to me to do the honours. Quite a responsibility but I suppose I will enjoy once I get going.
Might hire a 10-20mm lens. (That is also on the list for the future purchase)

Best of luck David, i`m sure you will do a great job.............
