I've just bought my first dslr & it will be arriving tommorow with nothing more than a lens, manuals & editing software.

I have ran a few searches to find a similar thread & so far have drawn a blank.

What i want to know is what other gear should i buy now & when should i buy it?

I'd be much obliged for a little guidance on the what my priorities should be in order of importance.

IE.

1. Memory Card
2. Camera Bag
3. Some kind of cleaning kit

The above is my idea of what i need to buy tommorow but i have £300 to spend in capital bonds (work bonus scheme) that can be used in Jessops so what am i forgeting & what will i eventually need.

Do your good deed for today, help a noob... :)

Good god, you don't know what you (and your wallet) is letting yourself in for! ;) :D

Flashgun
Tripod
Filters
Remote shutter release
Battery grip
Lenses....

The list goes on!

What are you going to be shooting? That will decide completely on what you should be getting. Of course the memory cards are fairly vital, without them the camera is a bit pointless! What are you planning on using it for? And welcome to the world of DSLRs!

Chris

I would get a memory card and bag then stop.

Go out and about and take some photos and get a feel for the camera.

When you have decided what sort of stuff you like to take pictures of come back and ask the same question.

:agree:

Sound advice.

Chris :)

:plusone: What they said! ;)

As said it depends on what you want to shoot.

Personally I found my first purchase to be a longer lens, and I'm only just considering getting a Macro lens. It all depends on what you wish to shoot.

Well your memory card is going to be a must, not going to do a lot with the camera without one
For what it's worth, I would rather have a few small cards, say 5 or 6 3gig cards that a couple of big ones (8gig).
That way, if during a shoot one of my cards fails (never happened yet) I will only loose 2gig of photos rather than 8!

You will probably want to get some cleaning bits and bobs, rocket blower etc...
This way if you pick up any dust or crud while your out and about, it wont cause much of a problem.

Depending on what your planning on shooting, you have a couple of other bits you could buy (depending on your budget).

If you can afford it, get your self a decent tripod (Redsnapper are good value) & a bag. My advice would be to get a bag that can cope with your growing hobby.
A flash is always good to have but only get it if you think you will use it because you could blow a lot of dosh on something you hardly ever use.

Hope that helps

Very cheap (well, on eBay at least ;)), but often overlooked, is the spare battery.

Depending on how far afield you are planning to go, how long you'll be shooting for and even how cold it's likely to be (you are in Scotland, even if it is spring everywhere else :D), you could potentially find your camera packing up on you when you're miles away from a mains socket :shake:.

Besides that, if you're tinkering around with it at home a lot, going through all of the menus and functions, it's good to have a spare battery to throw in there, if the power should happen to go off 'mid-tinker' ;).

Enjoy your new hobby and welcome to TP, Azrael !

I would buy a book "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson.

A valuable read.

Thanks very much to everyone that posted! I do realise alot of gear will be dependant on the type of photography that i want to do but i've got my list pretty much sorted now. :)

The list so far:
1. Memory card
2. Camera bag
3. Some kind of cleaning kit
4. Spare battery (NEW ADDITION)
5. Another memory card (NEW ADDITION)

Thanks very much for the guidance guys & i'll probably ask the same question again when i've found my feet & know what i want to shoot!

Much obliged!!!

Don't worry Azrael ;), you'll find no shortage of people who want to help you spend your money, here on TP - it's so much less painful than spending our own :p.

how about we spend the money for you;)

i recommend a uv or skylight filter to protect the front element of the lens-cheaper to replace than the front element if it gets scratched.
