Got quizzed for taking pictures at the airport...5 publications!!

Oh yes. And I am not sure it's that far off topic.

I was dressed down, but I wonder if I was dressed in a smart suit if the reaction would have been different. Treat people with respect and you might get some back.

Graham

I wonder if the person who asked you was in a uniform, whether YOUR reaction would have been different.

Horses for courses.

I was at Almeria airport yesterday up on the open (very cold) terrace taking pictures of planes landing and taking off just a few yards from a couple of police/customs packing the usual sidearms. Used my 100-400 and no hassle from them at all.

The fact that someone posts here to say they were left alone shows how bad things are.

Graham

If your outside the airport parimeter then the dispatchers have no right to question, I think I would have asked under whose authority they had the right to ask any questions at all.

Just another case of "Jobs Worth". Seems to me that give anyone a uniform and a badge,to remind them who they are incase they forget, and to make sure they don't forget they have to hang it around their neck, think they rule everything and everyone. There are far too many petty officials trying to throw their weight around and look big and important, and this is just one more case.
Terrorists only have to get lucky once, the anti terrorist authorities have to get lucky all the time. Its people like that dispatcher that keep airports safe for the rest of us to use.

I didn't take offence and happily produced said receipt to a rather young sales assistant although it turned out to be in the bag, rather than my pocket as I had thought.

But any representative of the company would have to act within company policy and I was left in no doubt that they did not.

I rather hate myself for not asking to speak to their superior there and then. Such is social conditioning.

So you were happy to oblige and, having done so, the staff member was (presumably) also satisfied, thus rendering the situation resolved.

Only after the event did you feel the need to go and 'cause a scene' as you put it to obtain some form of apology for no real purpose other than to make you feel better and point out that the young assistant had made an innocent error of judgement?

Can we swap lives? It must be great to only have such trivialities to worry about.

Do I really have to cause a 'scene' to stand up for my rights in a free society.
No you don't. Being polite and co-operative will do just as well and is likely to be quicker.

The last set of figures I saw showed that theft from retail premises amounts to the equivalent of £50 per family per year. Given that the vast majority of families don't steal, that leaves a small number of dishonest people doing very nicely for themselves while the honest families pay for it. I would be happy to see a lot more people stopped and checked as it would discourage potential thieves.

Similar comments apply to anti terrorism operations.

sadly I can't agree with you..................the less people are aware and prepared to stand up for fundemental freedoms the less work a terrorist has to do, and I'm neither a terrorist or a thief and object to being told I'm behaving in any way like one...............

and can you add a reference to those figures

You were trying to walk out of a store with a bag full of groceries and you got the hump because someone asked you for proof of purchase?

What bl***Y planet are you from?

Anyway to the OP, well done in getting in the Nationals and the calm way you handled being approached.

I think I shall bow out of this thread now because I had a point to make which was related to the original one in my view. You either agree or disagree which is part of a debate.

It's not clear why you arrived at that view from what I had written, but you might wish to reconsider what you have written if you carefully read it all back again.

Graham

From my days in retail you always had to be careful of people coming back in after buying the cheapest possible item and getting a bag, same reason you couldn't give bags away (unless it was someone very genuine - other carrier bag split etc)

Would soon use that to get something else from another store or say they bought it earlirer from your own store etc.

To be honest im inclined to agree that i dont understand why you went back to complain, you bought goods, put in your own bag and went to leave the store, they asked for the receipt you had which you did and everything was done.

Alternatively, you could of walked in, stole everything in your bag and walked out and not got any bother from anyone

Yup!! :D 3 nationals in one day.. :D

It is a great pic, and well deserved recognition :)

just out of interest, how did you get it in the papers? Just email it direct to the editors with a "I've got this great pic, want it? Normal freelance rates please..." type cover letter?

Congrats

Is that the same pic that's on page 15 of todays Sun ?
Nice shot btw

No I occasionally shoot with a news agency! They phoned and asked if I could get down there.. then send over the images, they take care of the sales :)

The smallest one, in the Mirror went for £150  Another 3 and a web fee on top of that! Minus the agency cut of course, but not a bad hourly rate on a 2 hour drive out :D

Cheers :)

Congrats for making the front page!!! And well done for how you handled the situation, obviously the better response would have been to punch the guy in the face as soon as he opened his mouth, and made a song and dance about him infringing your civil liberties, but you live and learn eh? :D ;)

Yea I'd have been tempted.. but there was a chain link fence between us, and the last time I checked... Chain link > Knuckles ;):p

Well done for making the papers and for handling the authorities with respect, for which they did the same to you.

Just to add comment to some of the above points, if you get a pass of any kind to be on an airport then you would have most likely have had the security training which talks about threats to the airport amongst other things. It is actively promoted that you should not feel shy about asking anyone to see a pass or to ask politely anyone what they are doing, if you deem that it is relevant to the security of the airport.

What authority do I have to do this? None I guess, but if me asking helps promote security to the airport, then I'm all for it and people should neither feel aggrieved or insulted if so asked.

I couldn't agree more! The chap I spoke to was very polite, friendly and helpful and at the end of the day just doing his job. :)

There was another chap, with a 350D and kit lens stood about 15ft from me  Think he'd left by the time the chap came up to me though! The fence is along quite a well used pavement so didn't look out of place!

Not to worry though... got one of the shots on the Daily Mail website :D Clicky

Well done m8,cracking image...

I cant believe some people's arrogance. You were asked to produce a receipt for goods from the shop which you already had in bags, big deal. Why shouldnt you be asked?? They have to deal with shop lifting every day which in turn hits us all in the pocket when they have to put the prices up to compensate. Fair play to the shop assistant I say, they were doing their job, and I think preventing shop lifting is part of their 'policy', jeeeeez! No harm done.

This has nothing to do with 'freedom', you were in their shop, on private property, they were simply asking for proof you purchased the items. Not unlike walking out of a cinema to go to the loo and walking back in, and a staff member asking to see your ticket.

Anyhoo, well done to the OP with the publications!

Congrats on the publications, great pic.

( To the off topic peeps, I've never been on a forum that has so many whingers in all my life, and i've been on a ton of forums, seriously take it elsewhere. Totally agree with above post though ;) )

that's a little black and white. if you have nothing to fear or hide, then why not have your DNA on a register and all that with the police.
however, with this encounter, it was a reasonable inquiry handled very well by both parties I think

Er, never said anythign about 'DNA registers'.....no sure what you're on about
I was just implying that I'd not have a problem about the chap asking me some security questions....

I'm curious, what would would've happened if one didn't have or couldn't find the receipt...?

Edit: Nice pic btw. :o)

Congrats on the coverage - always nice to get noticed.

Lol, well that would just be careless! But, as the stuff had just been purchased I'd go over to the same check out staff member I had just used and ask them to vouch that I had just bought them, still no harm done!

Bit too off topic now, apologies for carrying it on.

Well done on your coverage and communication skills. Sometimes a press card (or something someone thinks is a press card) comes in very handy for these situations. Which picture was published, the American Airways plane thats on your web site?

Thanks :) Yes that one is (or variations of it) along with 12 or so planes lined up at the terminal, taken high up from a car park! :)

Well done on the piccys, cracking shots. I hope you've given the airport a cut of the royalties, after all, you did steal their photons!

I thought i'd pop back in with a proper comment to go along side the Cheeky one. Well done mate! :D i think its a cracking shot and deffo worthy of a front page
