I've finally bitten the bullet and bought a second hand 400D.

I loved my Panny FZ50 for everything it was, but was finding its limitations a bit annoying at times.

It came with the kit lens 18-55, a case, 1 gig memory and a skylight filter, all software, cables and instructions.

The bloke reckoned he had took about 100 pics with it before deciding DSLR's were not for him.

I've paid £260.

Now I need to start all over again . . . . . :lol:
 
lovely starter camera, this is what i'm learning with also.
Check the camera's click when you upload to flickr, I think it might have been one of those sainsburys ones... :)
 
nice camera not bad price either. I will get flames for this probably but wouldnt bother with the filter. The lens is not the sharpest but the filter can make it worse!

I'm led to believe that the first thing I should do is ditch the kit lens and buy something else ....

What would be the first lens of choice, bearing in mind I have very little money. Not to bothered about big zooms at the minute, that can come later, what about a nifty fifty ?
 
I use a sigma 24-70 f/2.8 on mine and it pretty much lives on the camera for most things :) Nice wide aperture across the range, though people will probably say 24mm isn't wide enough. Suits me though. I have a 10-20 for wide stuff.
 
Nifty fifty is a must have in any Canon owners kit bag seeing as its cheap as chips and quality is great!!

The kit lens gets mixed reviews....for what it is, it gives good results, and I've seen some amazing photos taken with it, but you will start to notice the limitations of it quicker than you did with your old camera....so my advice is look for a good deal on a replacement, but don't be put off by the fact it's a kit lens :)
 
the nifty fifty is the a very good lens for your money! i payed £50 delivered off ebay for mine. It lives on the camera now! you realy notice the dif when you shoot 50mm on kit lens and 50 on the nifty. the sharpness is very different.

I wont ditch it as such, just I've heard thats what everyone does in favour of a better lens...

I think I'll look for a nifty fifty next and keep the 18-55
 
I bought a 400D Brand new a few weeks ago from Comet (£380).. The 18-55mm is good aslong as you can get close to the subject, it doesn't focus too quickly, but its a good starter lens and can produce some good results.

Im on the look out for a cheap 70-300mm for sports.

dont ditch it it will come in handy and is fine for landscapes as you tend to stop it down.

check the for sales section just notice the sigma 70-300 on sales its a good lens and i can vouch for that!
 
Don't ditch it - use it for a while then run Exposureplot* on your pics directory.
You'll be able to get stats from Exposureplot that will show your preferred focal range. Once you actually know where this is, you can spend your money on a lens that matches that range the closest.

Personally, I've still got my kit lens and I bought 3 primes to cover my favorite focal lengths.
But then I love primes.



*google it - it's freeware.
 
The 400D is one fine camera and a good price as well, Sigma do some excellent len's just remember on the zoom len's you might need IS (image stabilization < Canon) or ( OS optical stabilization < Sigma) for full zoom as camera shake becomes more of a problem

I have a cheap 75-300 on the classifieds here, that I've been using for sports (and motorsports).
