Hello all!

After meeting up with 'Ped' on here this afternoon, he hooked me up with some film, and we had a chat and drink. Firstly he is a really nice guy! And Secondly he loves his Rangefinders :)

This was the first time i've ever shot film. I didn't have a meter so i guess everything, These were shot on a Zenit EM with a Heilos 44M 58mm F/2 lens. This was using Ilford Xp2 400 film.

Here are a few of the shots that i thought came out pretty good! There arn't anything interesting i just wanted to finish the film and see what it came out like! For some weird reason some of the shots have darkeden'd edges which is odd i have no idea why! Oh well :)

do you have any lenshood or filters fixed to the lens, could be too deep causing shading
great set of shots though, love no1

Yeah i had a len's hood on the len's. But i've heard that the len's is next to useless with out the big hood for the heilos?

Not sure i will do some tests!

I've never used my Helios with a hood and have never had any big problems with flare etc. I would agree that the hood is responsible for the vignetting. The Helios is an exceptionally sharp optic and will produce good results on its own.

Nice to see you've started on film Simon :)

Yes the Helios lens is not very flare resistant, and it benefits from a lens hood to improve contrast (from reducing flare).

You can probably find a better matched (wider and less deep lens hood).

The images look like the scans are a bit lacking in the mid-grey area, but I'd hope that was just scanning. Otherwise, you'll love the look of proper silver halide film over and above chromogenic C41 film!

Yeah i'll check that out! Might just see if i can get a cheap screw in rubber hood or somthing! But the hood has been taken off the lens! And put in the box of other random camera bits! Itching to get out and shoot my next roll :P But if i put one in now, i won't get to finish it for agess :P

I've got one roll of Xp2 and roll of Fujicolour-What to go for next..hmm :)

:P I think i'm going to stick part of the box on the back to remind me that there is film in there :P

Thats actually a damned good idea, and one that I do on a regular basis. Some cameras actually have a little holder on the back to do just that, but a few of my older, or grungier ones don't possess such niceties, and end up with a film box end and a strip of gaffa tape on the back of 'em

I know what you mean mate :) This Zenit in True Russian Style has nothing on it that isn't needed. Alot of the features on it don't even work on it -Light Meter, Self Timer.

But its going like a champ, and if i ever got mugged.. Swift blow to the head with it and it would knock them right down :)

Hi Simon

Close inspection of the shots shows some lines going across the frame on three I can see, I wonder what that could be, maybe an issue at the developing end? watch out for it on the next films, take them somewhere else and see if they appear again. I'm talking about the line you can see here:

and here:

and also very faint on this one

Ahh thank you! yeah it could be? I might try giving the negs a wash in some Distilled water and get them scaned again, to see if its just a hair or somthing?

As it's consistent across 3 shots it won't be a hair, also a scratch would normally be white with a traditional B/W film, so I don't think it's that either, but could be wrong, maybe the C41 process would make it dark. It looks different though, less defined. Look at the negs carefully and see if it's on those, too

It's not going to help Ped, but I should probably let you know, that when I had my Zenit,
it did exactly the same thing for both colour and black and white negatives.

The film always seemed to have trails where the emulsion was scraped off - thus, they would come out as dark lines in colour or black and white film.

That's why I gave up with my Zenith. There were some films that were okay, but it was never possible to predict which. The film rewinding mechanism could have done it ... the winding onto the sprockets.....but nothing made sense. I eventually stopped using mine due to its inconsistencies and gave it to charity - got a Contax instead :)

My first real camera was a Zenit EM back in 1980. You'll learn a lot about exposure using the EM as it has an uncoupled exposure meter.
I found that it gave better results if I metered the ground or shielded the selenium cell from the sky while taking an exposure measurement.
The lens is capible of excellent results but its 58mm focal length means you have to use your legs more to obtain that perfect composition.

I got a Zenit EM for £10 off the Ebay. My first roll through it was so grainy. I love these photos. Especially the pigeon :)
