And it's up and running !!!

I got home just after 7, and by 7:19, the drives were in, power on, CD installed, and after familiar myself with the Client program, did firmware update, client software update, set admin password etc (did the same on my MBP as well). I have set it up to back up my USB Drive that I use to host my Wedding photos. It is backing up via Wifi N network currently.



In between I managed to get changed, got dinner too :p

Expensive? Yes
Can an idiot set it up? YES!!!!!!

I've been running 5TB of disc space on Drobo for a year - totally problem free. You'll find someone having a problem with anything if you look hard enough.
 
Had a drobo S for about 9 months and it's one of the best things I have ever purchased. Also purchased a network version as well.

Also has DUAL drive redundancy.!

Having had 4 buffalo units which ALL have failed in two years and now only one remains working.

ALWAYS keep you data on two systems. However good a system is you should have a backup.

You'd be surprised if I gave an answer to that, let's just say one of the biggest worldwide outsourcing companies you've probably never heard of...........but hey, at least they do have backups.

On topic, your obviously please with it so that's what matters really, like you said its the 'back up' not the primary.

to be honest i wouldnt be surprised, ive got a legacy box on our network with a RAID5 array that loops in a "rebuilding" status.. lol :gag:

but no my point was that with 1 drive out and running in "degraded" mode you lose about 50% performance through the drive (and if thats anything like the readynas performance that'd drive me mad lol), i hate to think what it would run like with 2 drives out.. with 1 drive down you should ideally be replacing it within 24 hours not waiting for a 2nd to fail.. yeah okay there is a slim chance of a 2nd drive going down in that 24 hours but in 11 years (or whatever it is now) in IT i havent seen it happen.

its more of a marketing feature i think.

Just found a neat trick, you can set it up so it (yes, the Drobo itself) sends you emails about its status, from ALL of it, to important to critical. So you can see how it is doing (if any drives failed) while you are away from it and ask someone at home or office just to replace the drive with the red lights !

It can't be easier !
 
I have one on my wish list, just need all the other things and then the money to buy one ...

I'm guessing you have the addtion network connection box? seems like a necessity really.

i have a regular Linksys modem router and just bought a Apple Time
Capsule for its N Wifi Network, using the Time Capsule to back up my OS and Apps, Drobo for backing up data. that way they are kept separate. :)

The Time Capsule has a gigabit switch, and the drobo has gigabit LAN so with N wifi everything flies :)
