You can also try dragging the top part of the boarder of your image(s). Without seeing how you're set up, it's a bit difficult to know what's happening!
Are you using Elements 9 ?
If so you need to click Windows / Images / Tile.
If the Tile option is greyed out you need to change one of the preferences, go to Edit / Preferences / General and then tick Allow Floating Documents in Full Edit Mode.
If you're using Elements 9, then next to Help is an icon with an arrow, click on the arrow and you can open photo's 2, 3, 4 at a time, side by side, one on top of the other etc.
think i have sussed it along the top is a box that says screen mode when you hover your pointer over it next to that is a box that says arrange documents click this and then click the box that says two up and you get two images side by side.
