Got a strange one coming up that should be fun.

I need to do a pregnant person who has suffered domestic abuse in iconic locations of my local city. Needs to be gritty and hard hitting.

Thinking of doing some cards for her to hold describing the abuse and doing a series panning out to reveal shes pregnant.

Anyone done anything like this who could maybe help with some ideas. Going to be likely on a local modern bridge. Millenium bridge in newport. And maybe down the dock lands.

For a charity so not charging but should be fun and some good experience.

An abandoned warehouse down the docks maybe? get some light rays coming through a broken window or busted doorway onto her tummy? Process it nice and gritty?

Just an idea.

a very sensitive subject especially for domestic abuse victims, i should think many would be vary, it may be worth speaking to someone who works in this field, sounds like a great idea to highlight the issue - good luck with the project

I work in the field of domestic violence so that makes it easier.

I like the idea of rays of light hitting the stomach.

And im in the Newport area need to use that location.

Thanks for the ideas though folks :)

Ringland can be a 'gritty' location, paricularly the highrise flats, and the 'sunken' shops.

The gas container in docks way, still has some old red brick buildings around it.

Is the Lysaght Institute building still there? - not sure how much access you could get, but i imagine it would be suitable.

Have they got photo's of injuries sustained? I would be tempted to just shooting them at there homes holding pictures up. The landscapes mayl detract from the subject.

Its a model doing a shoot for the dv not an actual victim. We will be making up injuries as its what the charity wants to portray.

The lysaughts building was great but now been renovated the bankside enterprise building under George Street bridge could be good. Just have be careful as usrd by junkies.

Ringland is where I had in mind however they want iconic newport buildings. Like the wave millenium bridge or maybe a pound shop haha.

Thinking the bridge empty with her sat with her legs up to her chin and some other poses.

That said had a message the model has gone into labour lol so waiting on a second haha

I would second this, yet another low-key session or nan goldin styled gritty session might lack punch.

Or could you shoot in real run of the mill places, a cafe, a nice pub, iconic nice middle class locations? Make the point that this kind of thing happens everywhere and not just in gritty grotty locations.

You'll have a job. Apart from the castle and transporter bridge, anything that might once have been described as 'iconic' in Newport was knocked down years ago.

Personally I would go for shoot in a regular house/flat. Domestic mainly abuse happens indoors not in a warehouse but its not confined to rough areas it covers the, whole spectrum of society. Sure make it look gritty if you want but keep it in context ie behind closed doors. Maybe even a kids bedroom or the babies nursery to emphasize the pregnancy aspect. Had you thought about having a male model in the background blurred out but identifiable as a man?

If you're stuck for a location consider your house as there is no set type of property for DV victims!

Having re read your initial post though, is it a client request that its shot in iconic locations or has the dv taken place at iconic locations? Also iconic to who? locals or outsiders as that could put a different slant on it too.

I'll add to those saying not to shoot it in 'gritty' run down places. It could add to the stereotype which some people hold, that this abuse only occurs in poorer families, or in 'dodgy' places.

Ditto the gritty processing. It's been done ad infinitum, and it takes away from the humanity of the subject. (Even if the subject is an actor/model).

Real people in real situations that others can relate to will stand a better chance of reaching people. Not a Model Mayhem style gritty-urban shoot.
